Apple’s new ‘Answers’ team is looking to build a ChatGPT-like AI search engine

Apple’s historic practice of “fiscal frugality,” or careful spending, has most likely put it behind in the AI race, and while the company has tried to avoid jumping on the AI bandwagon, Apple CEO Tim Cook has now publicly said that he’s ready to spend more to catch up.

A reliable Apple insider, Mark Gurman, has claimed that Apple is planning to develop its own search engine, much closer to the ChatGPT experience. Siri’s AI upgrade was halted earlier this year, and Apple now has a major gap to fill in. Its other genAI features, like Genmoji, have not been met with the same excitement seen around other rival AI tools.

Gurman has stated that Apple has formed an internal team, known as AKI, or “Answers, Knowledge and Information,” to create an AI experience that is similar to ChatGPT, for its ecosystem. Understandably, these claims are also being linked to Apple’s possible acquisition of the AI startup, Perplexity.

In any case, it is not certain at this point if Siri’s due upgrade will be cancelled in favor of a new search engine, but Apple has long waited for Apple Intelligence to shine, and it would possibly require more than a few niche features for the Cupertino tech giant to catch up to the competition.
