FIX: Android Phone Showing Unknown As My Phone Number

An Android phone might show “Unknown” instead of your real phone number in Settings > About Phone > Status, even if you can make calls and send texts without any issues. This usually happens because the phone can’t read your number from the SIM card, or the number was never saved on the SIM in the first place.

Many mobile carriers leave this field empty by default, especially on older or replacement SIM cards. You might also see “Unknown” after moving your number to a new carrier, using your SIM in a different device, or after a software update.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to find your own number. Then, we’ll show you how to manually save your phone number so it will appear correctly on your device in the future, rather than showing as “Unknown.”

Make sure your SIM card is properly inserted in your smartphone. If you’re not sure how to do this, ask a family member for help or visit the store where you bought the phone and ask the staff for assistance.

Finding Your Number

If you’re searching for your phone number on your device, chances are you don’t know it off the top of your head. Luckily, there are a few easy methods you can use to find your number so you can share it with friends, family, or save it on your phone for future reference.

Method 1 – Call a Friend

The first method is very straightforward but requires that you have calling credit or an active monthly plan. Ask a friend or family member for their phone number. Then, open the dialer app on your smartphone, enter their number and give them a call. Your number will appear on their screen—ask them to read it back to you or write it down for the next step.

Method 2 – Use an App

If you don’t have any credit or are unable to make calls, there’s another easy way. You can download an app called SIM Card Info. Here is a link to the app. Download it from the Google Play Store onto your smartphone.

Once installed, open the SIM Card Info app and look through the details. On the information tab, you should see your phone number listed along with other SIM card details. Write down your phone number on a piece of paper, then close the app.

Saving Your Number

Now that you know your phone number, you can save it on your smartphone so it no longer shows up as ‘Unknown’ in your settings. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Contacts app.ollie-contacts
  2. Tap the menu button.ollie-menu
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Own Numbers.
  5. Tap the Menu button again.
  6. Tap Create.
  7. Type in your phone number.
  8. Tap Save.

Congratulations! Your phone number is now saved, and you’ll be able to see it in the menu. Next time you need to share your number, you can easily find it under the settings menu—usually under “About phone”—as well as in your contacts app.

If you need any more help with your smartphone, feel free to browse through our website, or visit the nearest mobile retail store and ask the staff there for help.

On my new Oukitel U11 plus, I cant see my number in settings>sim card. When I try to call, I get the message: “Normal calls are restricted by access control.”. I HAVE been able to call a few times, but sometimes I hear nothing when I call, just a click after 15-20 sec when the phone hangs up. I bought two identically phones; my wife should also have one. Her phone works flawlessly. What can the problem be with mine?

      Hi Kristian,

In most cases, the “Normal calls are restricted by access control” message is a provider issue, such as a signal tower being disabled in your area – however, in other cases it can be a SIM card or dialer app issue. It would help to know your carrier.
Lets try this. Open the dialer on your phone and enter the code *#*#34777#*# and you should get a message about MMC being active, then try to dial a normal number.

If that doesn’t work, there’s a number of things to try, but it could be a myriad of things such as FDN mode being activated (phone will only make calls to numbers added to a whitelist), to an app interfering with the dialer, etc.

I found out yesterday that it is my carrier. They are switching between two different mobile networks, and my phone cant do this. Seems like this is also depleting the battery. I tried using two other carriers sim card, and everything was fine with SMS, MMS, calling and internet access 🙂

I have a Samsung Galaxy s3. I tried to use the Samsung find my phone feature to see if works.I logged into my Samsung Account and signed in. I turned on my Data on my phone and i tried to locate my phone. It wouldn’t locate it. I clicked on developer options and then status and where it says my phone number has someone else’s number listed. I called that number and i go a voice mail from another person who sounded East Indian. It’s not letting me change the number on my phone to mine.Where it says my phone number is all greyed out. I downloaded Cerberus and it works fine with that but i don’t understand why someone elses phone number is engraved in my phone.Has any one else experienced this issue with their phone?

There are special codes used by almost all carriers to help users figure out their own numbers, you can google the code by typing in “How to Check own number (Your Carrier)” and then typing the displayed code in your dialer

Try putting the SIM into another and check to see if that resolves your issue. If it doesn’t then try contacting your SIM Carrier as it can be issue with your SIM as well.

I changed the phone to an A20e but still shows as Unknown so it must be a sim card issue. How can i save as own number please?

Muhammad Zubyan Author Aug 5, 2021

If that’s the case I suggest you contact your SIM Card Provider and explain this issue to him. Just open the dialer dial your number and click on “Save as Contact”. Just save it.

I have in phone infos, Phone Number slot 1 Unknown & Phone number slot 2 [number displayed]
Both grayed out, can’t change them. I tried to enter my number in a few other places in settings, like personal info, system… nothing worked

Muhammad Zubyan Author May 2, 2022

In that case, try putting the SIM card into another phone and check if it is working. If it is working then there is an issue with your phone. If it isn’t then you should contact your SIM operator to get a SIM replacement.

Not really if everything is working fine that you shouldn’t really care about it.
