How to Fix Xbox Game Sharing Not Working?

Xbox Game Sharing not working is a recurring issue where the secondary console fails to access shared digital games or Game Pass titles. Instead of loading the shared library, the console prompts a verification message such as “Do you own this game or app?”, blocking access to content that should normally be available.

This problem typically occurs when Home Xbox is misconfigured, subscriptions or billing methods are invalid, or temporary authentication glitches disrupt license validation. In some cases, unstable internet connectivity or Xbox Live service interruptions can also prevent the console from verifying digital ownership.

Before applying fixes, check your connection using SpeedTest or Fast, and review the Xbox server status. If Microsoft’s servers are down, the issue can only be resolved once service is restored. Otherwise, try the solutions below.

1. Hard Reboot the Console

Cached system data and temporary authentication files can sometimes block license checks. Performing a hard reboot clears these cached files, resets the console’s network stack, and ends background processes that may be interfering with game sharing.

  1. Hold down the Xbox power button for 10–15 seconds until the console shuts down completely.
  2. Wait 30–60 seconds, then power the console back on.
  3. Test if game sharing is working.

2. Turn Off Recurring Billing

If the primary account has recurring billing enabled, Xbox may encounter conflicts while verifying active subscriptions across consoles. Turning this off forces the system to recheck your subscription status, refresh license validation, and clear temporary billing-related glitches.

  1. Log into the primary account on your Xbox.
  2. Go to Settings > Account > Subscriptions.
  3. Enter your passkey to access subscriptions.
  4. Open the active subscription.
  5. Select “Turn off recurring billing”.
  6. Click “Yes” to confirm.
  7. Restart your console and check game sharing again.

3. Update or Change Payment Method

If your account has expired or invalid payment methods, Xbox may block subscriptions until billing details are updated. Adding a new payment option ensures Microsoft’s servers can reprocess renewals, validate your subscription, and restore access to game sharing.

  1. Sign into the primary Xbox account.
  2. Go to Settings > Account > Payment & billing.
  3. Enter your passkey to view Payment options.
  4. Select “Add a payment method”.
  5. Choose Credit/Debit card or eWallet and enter details.
  6. Save the new payment option, restart Xbox, and test game sharing.

4. Remove and Re-Add Your Xbox Profile

If the local profile data is corrupted, Xbox may fail to pass authentication checks. Removing and re-adding your profile refreshes the login session, clears cached credentials, and forces the system to sync your account with Microsoft servers again.

  1. Go to Settings > Account > Remove accounts.
  2. Select the profile used for game sharing and choose “Remove”.
  3. Press and hold the Xbox power button for 10–15 seconds to shut down.
  4. Unplug the power cable for 2–3 minutes to complete the reset.
  5. Plug the console back in, power it on, and go to Sign in > Add new.
  6. Enter your account details again and test game sharing.
