How to Fix Windows Update Service Missing

Windows update is an important service provided by Microsoft. Furthermore, each update resolves issues, provides new security issues, and updates various functionalities of Windows. Windows update service missing means that the service ‘wuauserv’ or ‘Windows Update’ is missing from the list of services in services.msc. Furthermore, there are no defined reasons for why this error occurs or why the update service is deleted. The usual suspects are third-party applications or corruption in Windows update files.

Even though users may lay off updates or prefer not to update, apps linked with Windows may stop responding. Microsoft Store, for example, stops working if you are too many versions behind the current one. Moreover, even third-party applications face issues while running or they may not run at all due to crucial files missing from Windows.

Reset the PC

This solution should be used when you do not have some important files in your drive. Additionally, this method installs a clean Windows installation from within the Windows settings app. Likewise, there is a chance that you may have to remove all your files because they may have become corrupt. However, this option also provides the option to retain your data. But, to be on the safe side you should always create a backup of your data. To reset your PC:

1. First, press the Windows key and type Settings.

   

2. Click on Update and Security.

   

3. Then, go to Recovery
4. Afterward, click Get Started under Reset this PC.

   

5. Finally, choose either to keep personal files or remove everything.
6. Lastly, Windows will reset your PC. Your PC may restart several times.

Create a Registry Entry

On the other hand, if you are not tech-savvy or you do not want to take the risk of losing your data, you can try this solution. It has been proven to work on every forum and has no risks involved. The matter of fact is that most of the time the Windows update key is missing from the Windows machine registry. Comparatively, this method is just as easy to perform as the previous one without the risk of loss of data. To recreate the registry key:

3. Secondly, set Save as type: to All Files.

   

4. Then, save the file with any name, but add the .reg extension.
5. Additionally, wherever the file has been saved, it will appear with the Registry Editor icon.

   

6. Run the file. On the security dialog, click Yes.

   

7. Then, ignore the security check.

   

8. Your key has been added.

   

9. You can also download the file from here.
10. Afterward, run the file. Then, on the security dialog click Yes.
11. Lastly, repeat steps 8 and 9.
