How to Fix Update Error 0xc0000409 Windows 11 Version 22H2

The error 0xc0000409 pops up when the users try to upgrade to Windows 11 version 22H2. The error dialog states that ‘Something went wrong’ during the installation process but does not specify what exactly causes this issue.

In this guide, we will take a detailed look at the causes of this issue and the troubleshooting methods you can implement to fix the problem. We suggest that you go through the solutions first to identify what exactly might be resulting in the issue. Then, proceed with the relevant solution.

1. Disable Antivirus

If you use an antivirus program, this might be causing the problem. Despite the fact that such programs provide good protection against malware and viruses, they are known to block some of the system’s features, including update installers.

The best way to resolve this issue is to temporarily disable your antivirus program. As an example, we have explained how to do so using Avast antivirus. The steps may vary slightly according to your antivirus program.

Here is how you can proceed:

  1. Right-click on the antivirus icon in the taskbar.
  2. From the context menu, choose Avast shields control > Disable until the computer is restarted.
    Disable the antivirus temporarily
    Disable the antivirus temporarily

After disabling the antivirus, reinstall the update. If you want to enable the security program back, simply restart the computer.

2. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

Microsoft has a dedicated Windows Update troubleshooter to scan for update-related errors on your computer and fix them if they are found.

You can run the Windows update troubleshooter via the Settings app.

Here is how you can do that:

  1. Press Win + I together to open Windows Settings.
  2. Choose System > Troubleshooter.
  3. Now, click on the Other troubleshooters option.
Access the other troubleshooters in the system
Access the other troubleshooters in the system
  4. In the following window, you should see a list of the troubleshooters available. Locate the Windows Update troubleshooter and click on Run associated with it. The troubleshooter will now begin scanning the system for errors. Wait for the process to complete.
    Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
    Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
  5. Once the scan is completed, check the results. If the troubleshooter has identified any fixes, click on Apply this fix to implement the fix suggested by the troubleshooter.
  6. If the utility fails to find the problem, click on Close the troubleshooter and move to the next method below.

3. Reset Windows Update Components

It is also possible that the update services and cache files might be corrupted, causing this problem.

The system requires these components to install new updates on the system, and if any of these components are corrupt or disabled, you will encounter errors like this one. Fortunately, fixing this problem is quite simple, and we will be using a batch file for this purpose. The batch file will stop and restart all the services automatically.

Once the restore point is created, follow these steps:

  1. Click here to download the batch file on your computer.
  2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on it.
  3. Choose the Run as administrator option from the context menu.
Run the bat file as administrator
Run the bat file as administrator
  4. A Windows Defender prompt will now ask you if you want to run the unrecognized file. Click More info > Run anyway.
    Run the bat file
    Run the bat file
  5. Click Yes in the User Account C
  6. Wait for the batch file to complete its process, and then restart your computer. The pending update should be installed after rebooting.

4. Upgrade to Windows 11 22H2 From ISO File

The 22H2 update can also be manually installed using the ISO file if you are having problems installing it manually. You can also use this method if you do not want to perform extensive troubleshooting methods.

Here is all that you need to do:

  1. Launch the official Microsoft support website.
  2. Go to Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) and select Windows 11 from the list.
  3. Click on the Download button to proceed.
    Click on the Download button
    Click on the Download button
  4. Pick an installation language and click on the Confirm button.
  5. Hit the Download button again and wait for the process to complete.
  6. When the file has been downloaded, right-click on it and select Mount from the context menu.
    Mount the file
    Mount the file
  7. Choose the mounted drive and then double-click on the Setup file to begin the installation.
  8. In the following window, click on Not right now.
Click on the Not right now button
Click on the Not right now button
  9. Navigate to Next > Accept.
  10. During the process, select all the items you want to keep.
  11. Finally, click on the Install button and wait for the process to complete.

Hopefully, this method will allow the update to be installed without any issues. It is also possible to install the 22H2 update using the installation assistant instead of using ISO files.

If you want to use that method, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the official Microsoft support website.
  2. Click the Download Now button in the Windows 11 Installation Assistant section.
  3. Once the Windows11InstallationAssistant.exe file is downloaded, click on it to launch it.
  4. Hit the Accept and install button to begin the installation process of the update.
    Accept the terms and conditions
    Accept the terms and conditions

5. Clean Install Windows 11

If the solutions above have not worked for you, then you can try clean installing Windows 11.

In a clean install, any previous version of the software is wiped clean. As an alternative to a clean install, an in-place upgrade can be performed, in which elements of the previous version are retained. This, however, is a lengthy process so we recommend you only proceed with it when you have some free time on your hands.
