Twitter to Limit DMs for Unverified Accounts, Pushes Users to Pay for Verification

Are Non-Twitter Blue Users Getting the Short End of the Stick?

Elon Musk has imposed yet another restriction on non-Twitter Blue users. After limiting the number of posts they can read per day, Musk has now imposed a limit on the number of private messages unverified accounts can send per day.

These restrictions are starting to look less like a way to push out bot accounts and more like a business model. Twitter is essentially trying everything it can to lure in more Twitter Blue users, even if it means limiting the features of the platform for non-subscribers.

Twitter doesn’t acknowledges this though. It says that this is being done “to reduce spam in Direct Messages,” but then again you could argue that the same could be done by paying $8 per month. It makes little difference compared to the effect it will have on the general user base using the platform.

But this is not all. Remember how I said Twitter will literally FORCE you to buy their premium subscription. Well, soon, you won’t be able to message anyone that isn’t following you. Musk again says that this is being done to prevent the spread of AI bots, but it has to be understood how these policies affect normal people too.

Twitter knows that it has the upper hand. We all saw the majestic launch of Threads, but it is now reported that engagement on the platform has plummeted shortly after. Elon knew this, which is why we haven’t seen any rushed decisions made by Twitter. Within two weeks of Threads’ launch, we are seeing non-user-friendly policies being implemented.

From all of this, it is clear that Twitter is in a position where it could easily squeeze out as much as it wants without having a proper competitor. If Meta was unsuccessful, then its hard to say anyone else will overcome its dominance.

This lack of competition gives Twitter a lot of power. It can essentially do whatever it wants, without fear of losing users to another platform. Still, it remains to be seen what the future holds.

This is all we know at the moment, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.
