How to Fix TikTok Region or Country Not Changing?

TikTok can keep showing your old account country after you move, even with a local SIM and a working internet connection. The new country may be missing from Account region, or selecting it may produce a Cannot update region message.

The country saved on your account does not automatically follow your phone’s location. TikTok can require activity in the new country and other account conditions before allowing a change. A VPN or a different phone language cannot satisfy those requirements.

A For You feed full of videos from your previous country is different: recommendations also reflect what you watch and follow, so they can remain familiar even after the account country changes.

1. Check the Account Region and Its Change Requirements

TikTok can refuse a change even when the new country is listed. Open the saved region to see whether the app requires more local activity or another account action.

  1. Open Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Account, then User information or Account information, depending on your app.
  2. Open Account region and check the saved country.
TikTok Account information page showing the Account region or Country region option.
If the Account region field is not available, the issue is usually account eligibility rather than a broken button.
  3. Select your actual new country if it is listed. Read the requirements or warning before confirming.

TikTok can require that you have used the account in the new country, meet its minimum age rules, settle rewards from the previous region, and use an updated app. Follow the requirements displayed for your account.

A message requiring a certain number of days refers to TikTok’s activity check, not just the date you moved. There is no single waiting period to apply to every account.

For a data-maintenance message, follow any waiting instruction shown. If it persists or the destination is unavailable, ask TikTok to review it instead of resetting the phone.

Read the confirmation carefully. A country change can affect available features, rewards, and applicable terms, and another change may not be offered afterward.

You can also check the same account at TikTok.com: open Settings > Manage account > Account region if shown. A missing option in both places does not prove the phone is faulty.

If the region saves but Shop or Creator Rewards still refuses access, check that feature’s eligibility notice. The new country alone does not qualify the account.

2. Check the Active SIM and Internet Connection

A travel SIM can keep affecting TikTok after you return home. TikTok’s location guidance confirms that it can estimate location from the SIM region and IP address, even without GPS permission.

Phone number: update a linked number only if you have actually replaced it. Open Account > User information > Phone number > Change phone, follow the verification prompts, and keep access to both numbers during the change.

A local verified phone number gives TikTok a stronger region signal than a temporary VPN connection.

The phone-number setting maintains sign-in access; it is not the same as the SIM your phone uses. Changing that number alone does not change Account region.

  1. Temporarily disconnect an active VPN or proxy.
  2. Check Settings > Cellular/Mobile Service on iPhone or SIMs/SIM manager in Android Settings. Temporarily disable an unused travel line and select your local line for mobile data. Keep the eSIM installed.
  3. Close TikTok, turn off Wi-Fi, and test on local mobile data. Then compare a trusted Wi-Fi connection.

Mixed VPN, SIM, and IP signals can make TikTok keep the old country instead of trusting the new one.

If TikTok works on one connection but not the other, review that connection rather than changing the account again. A restored feed or Shop tab does not confirm that the saved Account region has changed; check the field itself.

Check the Store Country Only for Download or Update Problems

App-store country controls store availability, not TikTok’s saved account country. Leave it unchanged when TikTok already downloads and updates normally.

  • iPhone: open Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > Country/Region. Some iOS versions show View Account first.
  • Android: open Play Store > profile icon > Settings > General > Account and device preferences > Country and profiles.

For a genuine relocation, review Apple’s country-change requirements or Google Play’s requirements before proceeding. Balances, subscriptions, family membership, and payment methods can complicate a change.

If TikTok updates after correcting the store country, return to its account settings. The store change does not replace TikTok’s own eligibility checks.

3. Check Location Access and Clear Only the Cache

For inaccurate local recommendations, location access can help TikTok use your current position. It is optional and is not offered in every region or to every age group; a missing permission is not automatically an error.

  1. iPhone: open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > TikTok. Choose While Using the App if you want location-based recommendations.

  2. Android: open Settings > Apps > TikTok > Permissions > Location and allow access while using the app if available.

  3. For screens that stay blank or fail to reload, open TikTok’s Settings and privacy > Free up space. Tap Clear beside Cache only, then close and reopen TikTok.
TikTok location permission and Free up space cache settings used to refresh region data.
Location permission and cache cleanup can refresh stale regional data without deleting the account.

Leave Drafts, Downloads, and Android’s Clear storage/Clear data untouched. Clearing cache removes temporary files; it does not reset account eligibility or recommendation history.

If the screen loads correctly afterward, test the same setting again. An unchanged eligibility message still needs its stated requirement resolved.

4. Use Language Preferences to Improve the For You Feed

Videos from your previous country can remain because you still watch or follow those creators. TikTok generally gives your interactions more weight than language or location, so changing a country label is not enough to rebuild For You.

  1. Open Settings and privacy > Language > App language and choose the language you prefer.
  2. If your app also offers Content languages or Preferred languages, review those choices. App language alone mainly changes the interface.
TikTok language and content language settings adjusted to change For You feed recommendations.
A feed that still looks foreign is often a recommendation-history problem rather than an account-region problem.
  3. Search for creators and topics you genuinely want, then watch, like, or follow relevant content.
  4. Press and hold unwanted videos and select Not interested; skip similar posts rather than watching them through.

If relevant content appears, keep using the feed normally. These choices influence recommendations, not Account region, monetization eligibility, or a guaranteed audience for your own posts.

5. Refresh For You if the Old Recommendations Persist

An unwanted feed can continue despite changing language and viewing habits. TikTok’s For You refresh starts recommendations again with popular content, then uses your new interactions to personalize them.

The refresh cannot be undone. It affects For You, not your Following feed, profile, inbox, or ads.

  1. Open Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Refresh your For You feed.
  2. Read the explanation and confirm the refresh.
TikTok Content preferences screen showing Refresh your For You feed for regional recommendations.
The feed refresh resets recommendations, but your new watch and interaction behavior still trains what appears next.
  3. Watch and interact with content you want to see more often. Expect broader recommendations initially, not an immediate country-only feed.

If relevant content returns, no account-country change is needed just to improve viewing. Refreshing cannot remove a country restriction on a separate feature.

6. Update TikTok Before Considering a Reinstall

An unresponsive settings screen is worth checking on an updated app. A clear eligibility rejection is different: reinstalling will not remove that requirement.

  1. Update TikTok through the App Store or Google Play Store.
TikTok update screen and drafts folder warning before reinstalling the app.
Reinstalling can remove local drafts, so protect drafts before using it as a settings reset.
  2. Restart the phone and test the same setting again.
Deleting TikTok can remove local drafts. Save important videos outside the app and verify those copies first. A saved video is not a backup of the editable draft. TikTok’s sign-in does not restore deleted local drafts.

The TikTok draft recovery guide explains the limits if drafts are already missing. Leave TikTok installed if you cannot preserve work you need.

Consider reinstalling only for a settings screen that still malfunctions, after checking that TikTok remains available in your store and you can sign back in.

  1. Uninstall TikTok only after protecting your drafts.
Phone uninstalling TikTok after drafts have been saved.
  2. Reinstall the official store version.
App store installing TikTok again from the official listing.
  3. Sign in to the same account and reopen the affected setting.

If the screen now opens normally, check the saved country rather than judging by the feed. If the same rejection remains, further reinstalls are unlikely to help.

7. Use TikTok Support to Correct a Stuck Account Region

A missing destination or a rejection that continues after you meet the listed requirements needs an account review. Include the actual refusal, not only a description of the videos in your feed.

  1. Open Settings and privacy > Report a problem and select the closest account/settings topic.
TikTok Report a problem screen used to report an account region that will not change after moving countries.
TikTok support needs real relocation details, not a VPN location, to review a stuck account region.
  2. If the suggested answer does not help, choose No > Need more help? where offered.
  3. Include your username, saved country, actual country of residence, move date, app version, and a screenshot of the complete message. Note whether it also happens on the website and both internet connections.
  4. Ask TikTok to review the incorrect region or explain which requirement remains unmet. Follow any official request to review rewards, data, or terms before approving a change.

Share sensitive documents only if TikTok requests them through an official support channel. Avoid paid region-unlocking services or handing another person your login.

If TikTok still refuses the change because the destination is unavailable or the activity requirement is unmet, no phone setting overrides it. Keep the support reply so you know what must change before trying again.
