SEGA Completes $775M Acquisition of Angry Birds Developer, Rovio

Over the course of the past few years, we’ve seen an increasing trend towards mobile gaming. A prime example of this would be Microsoft’s ABK deal, which also wanted to capitalize on the popularity, and experience of King, the creator of Candy Crush.

SEGA has similarly embraced this trend earlier this year, when it expressed it’s interest in acquiring Rovio, the brains behind Angry Birds, for a staggering $775 million. This means that they’ll be paying over 19% of Rovio’s prevailing share at the time.

After talks between Rovio and Playtika about a possible buyout didn’t work out, SEGA quickly showed strong interest in Rovio. Surprisingly, in just four months, this interest led to SEGA successfully buying and owning Rovio.

With this deal in the books, SEGA wants to use Rovio’s experience in developing mobile games that connect with players in real-time. They’re doing this to bring SEGA’s current and new games to mobile players all around the world in a much more better way. Not only that, but SEGA also wants to help Rovio expand its platform beyond just mobile games.

From a strategic point of view, this is a great opportunity for Sega to expand its business in the global market. Our objective is to learn new strengths from Rovio’s high level of development and management capabilities. For Sega, we believe that by reaching out to the global market, we’ll be able to achieve another level of significant growth.”

Companies are starting to notice a big difference in the market between games on different platforms and games on mobile devices. They’re pouring in a lot of investment in this area. Another of this is Take-Two buying Zynga for a whopping $12.7 billion last year.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we ill keep you updated as new information becomes available.
