Fix: SD Card Music Not Showing Up on Android Phone

Are you having trouble getting your external SD card music to play on your music player?

There are a number of reasons why this may happen, but if you follow this guide you should walk away with a microSD card that can be picked up by your music player app.

First things first, you’ll need to check whether the files on your microSD card are being read by your smartphone at all. To do this, follow the steps provided below.

  • Visit the app menu
  • Look for ‘my files’ or ‘file manager
  • Navigate to storage options
  • Find external storage

Once you’re within your external storage, you’ll need to navigate to the folder that you saved your music to. If you can see your music, that’s great news – all you need to do now is follow the methods provided below to fix the issue with the external SD card music not showing in the music player.

If your external SD card isn’t being read at all, please refer to this article.

Method 1: Delete .nomedia File

The .nomedia file is placed in a folder to tell your smartphone that it doesn’t need to include the contents of that folder in gallery apps, music apps and other media players. Sometimes, by default, a .nomedia file is included at the root level of the microSD card and this will stop any files on the microSD card being picked up by the music player app.

To remove the .nomedia file, follow the steps provided below.

  • Visit the app menu
  • Look for ‘my files’ or ‘file manager
  • Tap the menu button on the file manager app and tap settings
  • Tap the option to ‘show Hidden files’
  • Next, Navigate to storage options
  • Find external storage

If a .nomedia file is present, it will appear on the external storage page. Scroll right to the bottom and search for it. If a .nomedia file is present, long press on the file and tap the ‘delete’ button or trash can icon.

Next, reboot your smartphone and check to see if your music is available in your music player app.

If it’s still not available, or a .nomedia file wasn’t present, try method 2.

Method 2: Move Your Music Folder to the Right Location

Each smartphone looks for music files in different areas – for example, the Samsung Galaxy S7 will search for any music files by looking for a ‘Music’ folder in the root of both the internal storage or the external storage.

If a music folder isn’t available, or it’s been put inside another folder, the music players on the Galaxy S7 will often not be able to find the music. Whilst some smartphones will search the entire external storage directory for music, not all will, so it’s best to follow these rules to ensure your music can be found.

  • Rename the folder with all of your music files in ‘music’
  • Move the music folder to the root directory of your microSD card

Make sure that as soon as you enter the external storage section on the file manager, the music folder can be seen. An example directory would be external/music. A directory that may not work would be external/myfiles/music.

Once you’ve edited your music folder to follow the two rules above, restart your smartphone and your music should now appear in your music player app.

Method 3: Clearing Cache/Data

In some cases, the Google Play Music application might be preventing the music from showing up. Therefore, in this step, we will be clearing the cache and the storage for it. For that:

  1. Drag down the notifications panel and click on “Settings”.
Dragging down the notifications panel and tapping on the “Settings” option
  2. Click on “Apps” and then click on “applications”.
    Clicking on the “Apps” option
  3. Click on “Google Play Music”.
  4. Click on “Storage” and select “Clear Cache” and “Clear Data”.
Clicking on the “Clear Data” option
  5. Check to see if the issue persists.

You said to refer to ‘FIX: MicroSD card Not Being Read By Smartphone,’ which appears not to exist. I’d like to be able to fix my issue.

Thanks. I was getting tired of blackplayer always showing the wrong number of songs no matter how many songs were on my sd card and no matter how I put them there. The .nomedia files a **** evil and my sd card and internal storage were fixed after I deleted them.

This didn’t work for me. I don’t even see an option to look for a .nomedia file. This is so frustrating. I spent five hours loading my micro SD card with music, only to have 98% of it disappear half an hour later.

Doesnt work, files are the proper format, music folder is on sd root, there is no .nomedia file anywhere, only a couple of songs play, nothing else

Insert the SD card on a computer and copy all the music files on it. Make sure to check each one to ensure they aren’t corrupted. If they are corrupted they might need to be redownloaded. If they aren’t, connect the computer and the mobile with a cable and transfer the music directly to the mobile. Insert the SD card in the mobile and copy the music from device’s storage to Music folder and check to see if the issue persists.

I had the same issue. I deleted the Music folder of the internal storage, so the Music App started to look into the SD card and I was ready to go.

It works. You have to look for the .nomedia file. Mine was hidden in an obscure folder with weird names. Alternatively, copy your files(some)from your backup on your PC to your micro sdcard, and then see if the phone would recognise your card. It takes a little bit of work.

I had the same problem after an update. Wiped my library and my playlists of songs. Tried clearing the cache in the app and through the phone settings under apps. Didn’t work. I went into my folders, into the SD card, and renamed my music folder that had all the songs to “music2” and all my songs showed up. Playlists are blank though. Better than nothing.

Copy them from the SD card to the device storage and see if they are scanned

They show up if I transfer them to the phone, but I want them on my SD card because I have so much music it’d take up to much space on my phone. Plus I’d like to easily transfer all of it if I get another phone. Any suggestions?

Clear the Cache and Data for Google Play Music and any other music app installed. Also, try to see if a computer recognizes the music because if it does, you can easily store them on there without having to back them up in the SD Card

Is there a third party music player on your device? Also, check for an issue with the SD card’s integrity.

The problem for me was that the album that was showing only 1 song was all .wma files. I got a converter and converted them to mp3 and the problem was solved. If you’re ripping CDs the windows player will default to wma, I realized that years ago, but this album was one of the first ones I had done. I guess android does not like wma but it’s wierd that one song of the album would show up and play.

Thanks for the help. Some times, due to unsupported character in the file name may cause this issue.
