Samsung Files Trademark for “Gauss,” Possibly a New Generative AI Platform
Samsung has recently submitted a request to the KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office), for filing a trademark under the name of “Samsung Gauss.”
At this point, there has been no official announcement regarding the patent, but we can infer, from the description of the trademark that it is somehow related to a new generative AI platform.
Samsung Electronics may use Samsung Gauss for designated products such as artificial intelligence software, machine learning-based language and speech processing computer software, computer software for artificial production of speech, text, images, sound, and video, and natural language processing, generation, understanding, and analysis of computer software.”

About three months ago, in June, Samsung Electronics Device Solutions‘ president, Lee Kyung-hyun had stated that he is planning own launching a large language model (LLM) of his own, surpassing the capabilities of GPT-6 – but this is not what Gauss is all about.
See, within Samsung, discussions for the need of a generative AI platform had been brewing for far too long, and employees were concerned about the privacy implications of using external AI services like ChatGPT. They also needed a service for translating and summarizing documents.
Samsung is also a major player in the tech industry that hadn’t poured it’s hands fully in the pool of AI, and so, this move seems like a desperate attempt to consolidate it’s position in the global market, although it doesn’t seem like Gauss would be a service available to the masses.
According to Samsung, the reasons for developing Gauss include better work efficiency, and to pair it with other Samsung devices to turn it into a part of Samsung’s ecosystem. It also wants the trademark to be registered as soon as possible – which is evident by the fact that the company submitted a priority examination earlier this week.
