Samsung is no stranger to special edition phones, and they do it very well too. One of their more iconic iterations, the Iron Man Edition Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge actually sold in an auction for a whopping £58,000. Now Samsung is collaborating with French luxury fashion house Maison Margiela, for a special edition Galaxy Z Flip 4.
The special edition comes with two iconic phone cases. First, a unique leather cover that reflects the house’s iconic bianchetto technique, which reduces an object down to the simple beauty of a white canvas and its four stitches emblem, which signifies anonymity. The case is overpainted to create a unique texture to act like a canvas which could change over time. The second cover is a spin on Maison Margiela’s emblematic numeric coding ring, evoking the house’s DNA.
Samsung has usually collaborated with fashion brands and icons to create special edition Galaxy Fold phones, for example the Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition. Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold2 Thom Browne Edition, which came with themed Galaxy Buds Live and Galaxy Watch3 in the box, the Galaxy Z Flip4 Maison Margiela Edition doesn’t feature any themed electronic accessories. Although the special edition box does arrive with two iconic phone cases along with a numeric coding ring.
Like most Samsung special edition phone, even the Maison Margiela Edition device comes with a redesigned UX. There’s even themed wallpaper artworks and icons along with it.
Maison Margiela’s signature solid white color with a matte finish was “weaved” into the smartphone with a drop of grey to create the optimal shade of white. The phone also embraces Maison Margiela’s décortiqué technique, which strips back an object’s outer layers to expose its core, featuring fine, translucent lines which signify the internal circuits of the phone.
As for availability, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 Maison Margiela Edition will only sell in select markets, including China (Hong Kong), France and South Korea. And that’s expected given the huge demand for high-end fashion brands in these regions.
