Samsung’s First PCIe 5.0 SSD, the 990 EVO Delivers 5,000 MB/s Reads, 43% Faster than 970 EVO Plus

Samsung’s move to PCIe 5.0 SSDs for PC will be kickstarted by the Samsung 990 EVO, which is a lower-priced version of the 990 Pro. It was listed on Ukranian pages earlier today, giving us a deeper insight into what the the Samsung’s first PCIe 5.0 SSD brings to the table.

Samsung’s First PCIe 5.0 SSD, the 990 EVO Boasts Up to 5000MB/s Read & 4200MB/s Write Speeds

The V-NAND SSD 990 EVO achieves up to 4200MB/s sequential write and 5000MB/s sequential read, and up to 700K IOPS random read and 800K IOPS random write speeds It comes in two storage options— 1TB and 2TB, ditching the standard 500GB we saw on earlier models. This particular variant doesn’t come with a dedicated heatsink; instead it uses a graphene sticker to better dissipate heat.

Samsung asserts that it uses it own “standard controller,” which seems to be a Samsung Piccolo (S4LY022). The 990 EVO can be connected on a PCIe 4.0 x4 or a PCIe 5.0 x2 slot. It is important to note that the 990 EVO doesn’t have a DRAM cache, and so the 990 Pro will still be Samsung’s top offering, having higher transfer rates despite being PCIe 4.0.

Samsung’s 990 EVO Starts at $125, Performs 43% Better than the 970 EVO Plus

The 990 EVO comes in at $125 for 1TB and $208 for the 2TB model. For a bit of a comparison, 990 Pro 1TB is currently being sold for $99 and the 2TB for $189, so the price gap is really not too much.

Samsung 990 EVO’s performs almost 43% better (transfer rates) than its predecessor, the 970 EVO Plus and is up to 70% more efficient too. It has the same M.2 (2280) form factor and comes in at just over 9g.

This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.
