AMD Launches the Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB, Faster Than the RTX 4070 Priced at $649
At China Joy in Shanghai, AMD has unveiled the long-awaited RX 7900 GRE (Golden Rabbit Edition). The ‘Rabbit‘ corresponds to one of the 12 Zodiac signs in the Chinese culture. As such, to commemorate this, AMD is known to launch products specific to China. The latest addition to this collection is the Radeon RX 7900 GRE, which should be an RX 7800 XT equivalent.
Specifications, A Heavily Cut Down 7900 XT
Specifications-wise, the RX 7900 GRE boasts AMD’s Navi31 XL GPU equipped with 80 CUs. Shipping with 16GB of VRAM, this GPU has a slower clock speed and a thinner bus width as compared to the rest of the RX 7900 series. To compensate for this drop in effective bandwidth, the TDP stands at 260W which is similar to the leaked RX 7800 (Non-XT).
SKU | Chip | CU | FP32 | Max Clock | Cache | Memory Bus | VRAM | Memory Spec | Speed (Gbps) | TDP
RX 7900 XTX | Navi31 | 96 | 6144 | 2.27GHz/2.5GHz | 96MB | 384-bit | 24GB | GDDR6 | 20 | 355W
RX 7900XT | Navi31 | 84 | 5376 | 2GHz/2.4GHz | 80MB | 320-bit | 20GB | GDDR6 | 20 | 300W
RX 7900 GRE | Navi31 XL | 80 | 5120 | 1.88GHz/2.245GHz | 64MB | 256-bit | 16GB | GDDR6 | 18 | 260W |
The memory speed has been reduced from 20Gbps down to 18Gbps. This combined with the already narrow bus results in 576GB/s of bandwidth. From the image, we can see 6 MCDs surrounding a single GCD. Although, as the 7900 GRE packs only 64MB of cache, it could be a hybrid Navi31xNavi32 design.
How Does it Perform?
Expreview benchmarked the RX 7900 GRE against the RTX 4070 and the RX 7900 XT. The RX 7900 GRE in almost every title, beats the RTX 4070, however, falls short of its bigger brother. That much is expected due to the cut-down specifications. Additionally, the clock speeds have been severely throttled, possibly to reduce power consumption.
Most titles were tested at 1440p using the Max preset, with a few glimpses of the 4K performance. To sum it up, the RX 7900 GRE is an excellent 1440P GPU and a viable 4K contender. However, based on its price tag, it should be marketed as a 4K-capable GPU.
AMD claims that the 7900 GRE is 13% faster than the RX 6800 XT. To be fair, as per AMD’s own naming structure, the RX 7900 GRE should compete against the RX 6900 XT.
Moving over to 4K gaming, the RX 7900 GRE is 8% faster than the 6800 XT. We should remind users that games from HoYoverse included in these tests are limited to 60 FPS, so natively the difference will be non-existent.
Availability
AMD currently places the RX 7900 GRE above the Radeon RX 6950 XT, at least in terms of pricing. The real-world performance should also be similar or better. The RX 7900 GRE launches today in China with a global launch planned.
AMD China has confirmed the international availability of the RX 7900 GRE through system integrators. The 7900 GRE is currently specific to only the 3 board partners namely Sapphire, PowerColor, and XFX. Moreover, AMD will launch a reference model for reviewers. From the official slides, it can be seen that the RX 7900 GRE will cost $649 (USD), which should be the US Retail MSRP.
