PlayStation 5 Leads the Console Sales in October 2022, Leaving Xbox Series and Nintendo Behind
Since PlayStation and Xbox brands came into existence, console wars have been a thing. Sony has always been a clear winner of sales wars over the years. However, with the introduction of next-gen consoles, Microsoft took its gaming division seriously. It had been making moves here and there to make its position stronger than before in the market.
Still, PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in October 2022, as revealed by NPD group in an extensive report on US consumer expenditure in the gaming Industry. The sales recorded in the report include the sales data from October 2 – October 29, and PlayStation 5 is in the number one spot in both unit sales and dollar sales.
While the Xbox Series came in the second position, and Nintendo Switch was the third. However, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series sales in the US have seen a double-digit growth rate, making this month the fourth consecutive month to see a positive growth rate.
On the other hand, year-to-date unit sales are dominated by Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series as runner-ups in both year-to-date unit sales and dollar sales. As stated by Mat Piscatella, director NPD group in the report:
U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories totaled $4.3 billion during the month of October 2022, flat when compared to a year ago.
ardware was the best performing segment during September, led by double-digit percentage growth for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Year-to-date total video game spending across content, hardware and accessories is now 8% lower than 2021, at $38.4 billion.”
Sony also released its quarterly financial report recently, which revealed that PlayStation 5 sold only 3.3 million units worldwide in the Q2 of 2022. In contrast, the sales target set by Sony for PlayStation 5 was 18.2 million units by the end of the year, and 3.3 million is not adequate to meet that goal. What are your thoughts about this?
