Fix: PDF Icons Turned Black or Thumbnails Not Showing
When opening or browsing PDF files on your desktop or through File Explorer, you may suddenly notice that the icons turn into solid black squares. Although the files still open correctly, their thumbnail previews disappear. This happens when Windows fails to render the PDF icons properly due to a glitch in its thumbnail generation system, forcing it to display corrupted or generic icons instead.

The most common cause is a corrupted or outdated Windows icon cache. Other possible causes include:
- Incorrect default application associated with PDF files.
- Disabled or blocked thumbnail generation.
- Hidden thumbnails in File Explorer settings.
1. Set Default Program for PDF Files
If the default program for PDFs becomes unregistered, Windows fails to link the correct thumbnail to the file type. Reassigning the default viewer (like Adobe Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Edge) refreshes the file association and triggers Windows to rebuild its icon cache properly.
- Right-click any PDF file and select Properties.

- Click Change next to Opens with.

- Select your preferred viewer, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Edge.

2. Change File Explorer Settings
When File Explorer is configured to show icons instead of thumbnails, Windows cannot generate the small image previews for PDFs. By enabling thumbnail display, the system can once again render the correct icons.
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer, then click View > Options.

- Go to the View tab.
- Uncheck Always show icons, never thumbnails.

- Click Apply and then OK.
- Close and reopen File Explorer to refresh your icons.
3. Clear Icon Cache
A damaged cache often prevents Windows from displaying proper thumbnails. Deleting the icon cache removes all corrupted entries and forces Windows to rebuild fresh versions automatically, fixing the black icon issue.
- Press Windows + R, type
%LOCALAPPDATA%, and press Enter.
- Delete the
IconCache.dband anyIconCache_*files.
- Press Windows + R again, type
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer, and press Enter.
- Locate and delete all
thumbcache_*.dbfiles.
- Restart your PC to rebuild the icon cache.
4. Update Windows
Sometimes, thumbnail rendering issues are tied to Windows bugs that get fixed in later updates. Installing the latest patches ensures all icon management components are working correctly.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Navigate to Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install all available updates.

- Restart your PC once installation completes.
