Nothing Chose MediaTek 7200 Pro Over Snapdragon SoCs for Better Performance and Efficiency

Nothing has confirmed that the upcoming Phone (2a) will come with a custom MediaTek chipset, not a Snapdragon SoC as seen in the company’s past releases. In a video titled “What’s in Phone (2a)?” uploaded to YouTube, the company explains the thought process behind this decision.

In the past, Nothing released two phones, the Phone (1) and the Phone (2), both powered by the Snapdragon 778G and the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, respectively. However, this time, with the launch of its first (supposed) budget-series smartphone, the Phone (2a), the company has opted for a custom-tuned MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro.

The Snapdragon 782G and 7s Gen 2 Were Considered for the Phone (2a), But Were Immediately Dropped for Dimensity 7200 Pro

According to Raymond Zhu, the product marketing manager at Nothing, the company made the decision with the idea that even for a budget phone, performance shouldn’t suffer. This is why, even with two Snapdragon SoCs under consideration, namely the 6nm 782G and the 4nm 7s Gen 2, MediaTek was preferred.

While there was no mention of the Phone (2a) or its performance itself, a comparison was made with its Snapdragon counterparts, and the 7200 Pro seemed to perform almost 10% higher than the aforementioned chips. Since it is built on TSMC’s 2nd generation 4nm process, there is a good chance that the company might have secured a favorable deal as well.

While the Dimensity 7200 is a known SoC, the “Pro,” in particular refers to the custom chip housed in the Phone (2a). It scores 720,000 in AnTuTu and is already considered as one of the better mid-range chips out there.

With the more expensive Nothing Phone (2) housing the old Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and the company playing it aggressive with the budget releases, it only raises more questions as to what approach will be taken for the launch of the Nothing Phone (3) this summer.
