Xbox Games Will Soon Feature AI-Generated Characters That Are Better Than Real, Scripted Actors
Microsoft has recently announced a partnership with Inworld AI, an M-12 portfolio company, to create game development tools that will allow developers to use the power of AI to create more realistic and engaging characters, storylines, and quests than traditional scripted ones.
Microsoft’s New Game Development Toolkit Uses AI to Create Storylines, Dialogue Trees, and NPCs That Feel More Natural and Realistic
The two companies are working together on a game development toolkit that will streamline the process of scripting out elements of a game and will be working with game studios to implement this within their development cycle. The toolkit will be used to create storylines, dialogue trees, and generate real-time NPCs that interact in a more natural and realistic way.
At Xbox, we believe that with better tools, creators can make even more extraordinary games. This partnership will bring together: Inworld’s expertise in working with generative AI models for character development, Microsoft’s cutting-edge cloud-based AI solutions including Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Research’s technical insights into the future of play, and Team Xbox’s strengths in revolutionizing accessible and responsible creator tools for all developers.”
-Haiyan Zhang, general manager of gaming AI at Xbox
Inworld’s Character Engine specifically, uses large language models (LLMs) to create AI NPCs that are more engaging and realistic than ever before. Unlike traditional dialogue trees, which restrict players to specific branches of a story, Inworld’s Character Engine allows for more open-ended and creative conversations.
Imagine being able to ask an NPC any question you want, and getting back an actual thoughtful, informative response, rather than a script. It’d be like having a conversation with an NPC that feels like you’re talking to a real person.
We want to help make it easier for developers to realize their visions, try new things, push the boundaries of gaming today and experiment to improve gameplay, player connection and more. We will collaborate and innovate with game creators inside Xbox studios as well as third-party studios as we develop the tools that meet their needs and inspire new possibilities for future games.
-Haiyan
The toolkit, if rightfully implemented would allow for better, more engaging storylines, ones that would push the boundaries of innovation as we know it today since developers would be able to create storylines that are more, say unpredictable, and that respond to the player’s choices in a more meaningful way. This is all we know for now, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.
