How to Fix HP Hotkey Support Blank Pop-up in Windows?

When pressing FN keys on an HP laptop, you may see a blank “HP Hotkey Support” window instead of the usual brightness or volume overlay. This happens when the HP Hotkey UWP Service starts but fails to initialize the on-screen display (OSD) components required to render those visual overlays.

In this state, the service still detects the key press but cannot display the overlay because its dependent modules either fail to load or crash at launch. The most common causes include:

  • Corrupted or incomplete HP Hotkey installation – the service starts but required DLLs fail to register.
  • HotkeyUWPService.exe crash at startup – the executable launches the shell but exits before loading the OSD renderer.
  • Interference from other HP background utilities – such as HP Audio Analytics or HP System Event Utility hooking into the same process chain.

These issues have become more common after Windows updates or automatic driver replacements, which can unregister the Hotkey service or install a mismatched version. Fortunately, this is a software-level problem, not a hardware fault, and can be resolved through a few targeted repairs.

The following solutions are arranged in logical order, starting with the simplest service adjustments and moving toward full reinstalls and BIOS-level fixes. Follow them step-by-step to restore proper on-screen functionality for your FN keys.

1. Reinstall the HP Hotkey UWP Service

Disabling the service temporarily and then reinstalling a clean copy forces Windows to rebuild its registry entries, replace broken dependencies, and reload the OSD module correctly.

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Locate HP Hotkey UWP Service, right-click it, and select Properties.
  3. Set the Startup type to Disabled, then click Apply and OK.
  4. Download the latest HP Hotkey Support Utility for your system from:
    https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp91501-92000/sp91903.exe
  5. Right-click the downloaded file and choose Run as administrator.
  6. Once the installation completes, restart your PC and test the Fn keys.

2. Disable the HP Audio Analytics Service (if installed)

HP’s Audio Analytics service uses the same notification framework as the Hotkey Support module. When outdated or misconfigured, it can block the Hotkey UWP service from initializing the OSD layer properly. Disabling this service removes the conflict, allowing the Hotkey service to render its interface correctly.

Note: Disabling HP Audio Analytics does not affect sound quality or device audio performance. It only stops HP’s background telemetry that monitors audio usage patterns and environmental noise levels. You’ll still have full access to all sound and microphone features.

  1. Press Win + R keys, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll down, find the HP Audio Analytics service, right-click it, and select Properties.
  3. Set the Startup type to Disabled, then click Apply and OK.
  4. Restart your computer and check whether the issue is resolved.

3. Use HP Support Assistant

This method connects you directly with HP’s built-in Virtual Support Agent inside HP Support Assistant. The agent can detect missing or broken components of the Hotkey UWP Service and provide the exact driver package your laptop needs. This avoids the common issue of downloading the wrong build manually.

  1. Open HP Support Assistant from the Start Menu. (If you don’t have it installed, you can download it from following link.)
  2. Click on Guided Troubleshooting button.
  3. When the Virtual Agent appears, select Ask Now.
  4. In the chat box, type “HP Hotkey UWP Service” and press Enter.
  5. The assistant will identify the missing or corrupted component and provide a direct link to the correct driver for your model (for example, HP Hotkey UWP Service – ProBook 470 G3).
  6. Click the link, download, and install the package.
  7. Restart your laptop and test the Fn keys again.
