Sometimes the issue might simply be with the Microsoft servers. If you just upgraded and you are seeing this error message then it is recommended to wait at least 24 hours. It should automatically be activated within 24 hours. If your Windows still doesn’t activate after 24 hours then move to the methods given below.

Method 1: Upgrade to Windows 10 then perform a clean install

This error arises most of the time when users try to install windows 10 with a clean install instead of updating it. To avoid this error, you need to upgrade your current windows version to windows 10 and then it is advised to perform a clean install. Windows will automatically check whether your Windows copy is genuine or not. You are advised to do the clean install after this process. And if your previous windows license was genuine then windows 10 operating system will be activated and marked as genuine.

Note: If you have already installed/upgraded to Windows 10 and performed a clean install then you can activate Windows 10 as well. For this to work, you need to have the license key of the previous Windows (7 or 8). Simply install the Windows 7 or 8/8.1 and activate it with your license key. Upgrade Windows 10 and it will automatically be upgraded and activated.
