How to Fix a Sony Vaio Laptop Not Turning On

If you own a Sony Vaio, there’s a huge chance that you may encounter the issue of it not turning on. Many Sony Vaio users face this problem when suddenly their laptop ceases to start. Whenever you press the button, your green light will turn on for a few seconds, and then it will turn off. You can press the power button as many times as you would like, but the green light will only illuminate for a few seconds, leaving you facing the black screen of your laptop. This is quite annoying since it can occur unexpectedly, even if your device was running just fine during your last usage.

The primary reason behind it remains unconfirmed. The issue could stem from a faulty battery, a defective motherboard, or a potential manufacturing fault within the device. Most of the time, if your device is still within the warranty period, it will be replaced with a new one. Otherwise, you may need to take it to a repair shop.

But there are a few tricks that will save you a lot of time and money. You should try method 1 first. If that fails, then try method 2 to troubleshoot the problem and hopefully you will find where the problem is.

Before trying these methods, make sure you have checked these things.

Things to check before trying Method 1 and 2

  1. Make sure your battery is charged. Keep your AC input plugged in for a while
  2. Make sure your AC adapter is working. Most of the time there is a light on the adapter that indicates whether it is getting the power or not. If there is no indicator then try to use it with another laptop to check if it charges the other device
  3. Make sure you are using the Sony Vaio’s original adapter and not a Third party adapter
  4. Make sure your adapter is plugged into the wall outlet and not into a surge protector or extension cord (your extension cord might be faulty).

Method 1: Unplug battery and AC adapter

  1. Firstly turn off your laptop and unplug your AC input.
  2. Remove the battery
    1. Flip the laptop to bring its underside up.
    2. Slide the battery Lock switch (indicated with a lock shape or with writing) to unlock position
    3. Now slide the battery Release latch and keep a finger on it. Don’t release the latch
    4. Now you should be able to see your battery get a little loose. Lift the battery pack upwards and then slide diagonally to take it out
  3. Press the power button for 58 seconds and then release it
  4. Put back the battery
    1. Slide the battery Lock switch to unlock position (if not already)
    2. Slide the battery diagonally in the battery compartment until it fits in the both sides of battery compartment
    3. Push the battery downwards (towards the Release latch) until it clicks. You will be able to see the battery is fixed in the battery compartment
    4. Slide the battery Lock switch to lock position
  5. Plug in your AC input and turn on the laptop

Note: The steps of removing and inserting the battery might differ a little bit depending on your specific model.  If you are not sure then follow the steps mentioned in the user manual (that comes with the device and is available online) of your Sony Vaio.

Method 2: Unplug everything and direct AC method

  1. Firstly turn off your laptop and unplug your AC input.
  2. Remove all external devices like mouse, keyboard etc.
  3. Remove the battery
    1. Flip the laptop to bring its downside up
    2. Slide the battery Lock switch (indicated with a lock shape or with writing) to unlock position
    3. Now slide the battery Release latch and keep a finger on it. Don’t release the latch
    4. Now you should be able to see your battery get a little loose. Lift the battery pack upwards and then slide diagonally to take it out
  4. Keep the power button pressed for 5 seconds and then release it
  5. Plug in the AC input (without the battery) and press the power button. If your laptop works properly then that means your battery is faulty so get a new one or get it checked from a repair shop

Should you have recently installed new RAM in your device, remove it by following the user manual that came with your Sony Vaio, or by visiting a repair shop. Then, proceed with method 2. If your laptop functions properly afterward, this indicates that the installed RAM was faulty.

If none of the methods mentioned here work, then contact customer support or go to a repair shop near your home.
