Siri is an intelligent personal assistant designed to perform various activities based on verbal commands by the user. As a user of iPhone 4S and the later versions, you can control your mobile device and its various apps using Siri. This is no exception for iPad, iPod Touch and Mac users who also get to the benefits brought by the assistant. As a bonus to the users it is designed to enable the users to have their words translated into text, therefore, it is used for emailing and text messaging.
However, for everything to function in an easy and efficient manner, there must be a strong internet connection. This means that without an internet connection, Siri will be rendered out of use. It will not be able to perform a range of activities like executing phone actions, planning events and reminders, as well as verifying basic information among other tasks. To avoid encountering such limitations, you should ensure that there is the availability of a stable internet connection. Here we will offer you the best solutions to your internet connectivity problem and enable your Siri to perform its variety of tasks as usual.
What causes Siri not to Connect to Network?
We investigated this particular issue by looking at various user reports and the solution strategies that were commonly used to resolve the issue by users finding themselves in a similar situation. There are several reasons due to which Siri cannot connect to the internet and they include:
- Router connection issue: Your router could have connection issues which might lead to a lack of internet connection. Lack of internet means Siri will not be able to function.
- Obsolete version of iOS: If you are using an outdated version of iOS, there is a possibility of an internet connectivity issue. This may cause Siri not to connect to the internet.
- Dictation feature: In some cases, the dictation feature might create connectivity issues, thereby, not allowing Siri to properly connect to the internet.
- Network settings: Poor or corrupted network settings will cause internet malfunction, therefore, not allowing Siri and other applications to connect to the internet.
- Bugs and glitches: The availability of bugs and glitches in your devices creates various malfunctions in the system including the inability to connect to the internet.
Now that you have a basic understanding of the nature of the issue we will move on towards the solutions. Make sure to implement these in the specific order in which they are listed to prevent any conflicts.
Solution 1: Refresh Siri
Before anything else, you should first consider refreshing Siri before proceeding to any other solution. This will help you easily fix the internet connection problem or give you a head start to determine what the cause of the problem might be. You need to turn Siri off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. Remember to take your time and don’t rush in order to get a positive result. You can restart your phone as well after turning Siri off and then proceed to turn it back on. To refresh Siri, you need to follow the steps below:
- Go to Settings and click on General.
2. Scroll down and select Siri.
3. On Siri screen, turn Siri off. Wait a few seconds then simply turn it back on.
Solution 2: Check your Router Connection
The connection issue could be with your router; hence, you need to double check it to ensure it is properly connected and in good condition. You can try to connect other apps to the same router and find out whether the issue is with the router. If the connection is successful, then the router would be ruled out from the issue. But if you are not able to connect, then it is evident that the router causes the connection problem.
You will, therefore, have to troubleshoot what could be the problem with the router. First, you will have to restart your router by unplugging the power cords from the walls and plugging it back in after a few seconds. You can also press the on/off button located at the back of the router as shown in the figure below. This would probably allow Siri to connect to the internet successfully.
If it doesn’t work though, you will be required to restore the router to factory settings. This will clear all the data, settings and configurations, hence, clearing the bug that might be causing the problem. To factory reset the router, you have to press the reset button located at the back of the router, wait 15 seconds and then release it. If you can be able to use your finger to press, you can as well use a paper clip or a pin. The reset button is as shown below.
Note: Make sure that you have your router configurations at hand (if any) as this will refresh it completely and set the default settings.
Solution 3: Reset Network Settings
If Siri is still unresponsive to internet connection after checking your router, you should try to check on the device-related issues. The problem could be with the network settings; therefore, you will be required to reset. This solves the majority of the internet connection issues and the one with Siri is no exception. This process will clear all your established connections so you will be required to set them up again later. To achieve this, you will need to follow the procedure below:
- Go to Settings and tap on General.
2. Tap Reset.
3. Select Reset Network Settings. You might be required to enter your passcode after this step.
4. Click on Reset Network Settings again to confirm.
5. Restart your phone and Reconnect with a known Wi-Fi source and then try out Siri again.
Solution 4: Disable/Enable Dictations
Dictation is a supported feature that gives you the ability to have your words translated into the text to achieve good results. On the contrary, this feature is likely to cause a connection problem with Siri. You are, therefore, recommended to rest it by disabling and enabling it thereafter. To accomplish this, you have to follow the steps below:
- Go to Settings on your iPhone and Select General.
2. Open keyboard.
3. Turn off the Enable Dictation.
4. Restart your iPhone. After the phone is restarted, enable the Dictation again.
Solution 5: Update iOS
Upgrading to the latest version of iOS gives an amazing opportunity to explore new features and also solve minor issues. If you are using an obsolete version of iOS you need to update it to the latest version in order to achieve a successful internet connection for Siri. However, there might be cases of the same problem with Siri after an upgrade. This will force you to downgrade to the second last version.
Above all, upgrading comes with more problem-solving capabilities and better functionalities. An upgrade notification is normally sent to you or you can as well check for them manually. Before updating, you have to ensure that you have a stable internet connection, enough battery, and back up to iCloud or iTunes. If all of these are checked, be free to follow the steps below:
- Tap on Settings and tap on General.
2. Click on Software Update.
3. If an update is available, click on Download and Install.
