FIX: A problem has occurred in BitDefender threat scanner

An issue has arisen with BitDefender Threat Scanner, generating an error file at c:\windows\temp\BitDefender Threat Scanner.dmp. It is highly recommended to forward this file to the application’s developers for further error analysis.

The pop-up suggests a Threat Scanner.dmp file that is typically unreadable in Notepad. If neglected, your computer will eventually restart.

This error results from a corrupted Spybot file, typically due to a compromised DLL file.

Method 1: Execute the Patch

BitDefender has a patch to fix this known issue.

  1. For 32bit operating systems run this patch.
  2. For 64bit operating systems run this patch.

Method 2: Repairing Corrupted Files

  1. Click Start (bottom left corner) and select File Explorer. For Windows 7, click Start and select Computer or My Computer.
  2. Type “C:\Program Files (x86)\Spybot – Search & Destroy 2” in the address bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Find the SDAV.dll file.
  4. If you can’t find the file, download it from this location.
  5. Once the download finishes, locate the file, right-click on it, and select ‘copy‘.
  6. Navigate to the Spybot – Search and Destroy 2 folder (repeat step 2).
  7. Right-click and select ‘Paste‘ in the ‘Spybot – Search & Destroy 2’ folder.
  8. If the file already exists, verify its size by right-clicking on the dll and selecting properties.
  9. If the size isn’t 32KB, download the file from this location.
  10. Follow steps 5 to 7. After clicking ‘paste‘, opt to ‘replace the file in the destination‘.

Method 3: Remove and Reinstall

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Go (here).
  2. Download the BitDefender Removal Tool.
  3. Run it, execute it and remove BitDefender.
  4. Re-download BitDefender and install it.

I have Windows 7 and almost every time I shut down my pc I got that messege and the pc restarted. I dont use BitDefender so this patch, which I tried, did not work for me. It seems, though, that many AV programs use Bit defender, among them, Spybot which I do use. Spybot said the file might be corrupted so you should download the healthy file from their site. I did so but it made no difference. After a couple of months searching for solutions, what I did, in the end, was simply delete the file. A week has passed, the messege has not appeared any more nor has the pc restarted at shutdown and everything seems fine! So I just came here to leave my witness as it might help anyone with the same problem… 🙂

    Hi All,
I tried all those patches etc WITHOUT any success…
I finally did a complete uninstall of Spybot SD with Revo Uninstaller and the problem was fixed.

    Just sharing!

    Enjoy!

The problem DOES seem to originate with Spybot S&D (at least on my computer). I tried renaming and deleting the SDAV.dll file and downloading it’s latest version from Spybot’s website… to no avail. The only thing that seem to fix the problem was completely uninstalling Spybot (using Revo Uninstaller) and removing all traces of it from my computer. There is a nasty “Upgrade.exe” program that still runs at startup, which attempts to RE-install Spybot, but I just click NO to this. I would like to find out how to stop this from running. Otherwise, removing Spybot completely seemed to fix the “BitDefender Threat Scanner” problem. I will never use any of Spybot’s products after this.

The SDAV.dll file is no longer listed in S&D’s missing files.
Repair tool does not work on Windows 10, gives an error.

So none of these work on Windows 10, it won’t remove fully, so this program’s a virus then, right?

I seem to have fixed this with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Well first off, I can’t do any of this because the BitDefender error happened after a restart and it freezes my PC and displays the error on the screen I normally would log into the computer. Secondly I do not have Spybot, had It once like two computers ago and didn’t like it. I use my laptop as a permanent pc in my basement, and power settings are set to only sleep, never to power down. I avoided updating windows 10, because last time it caused havoc. Had it disabled from services.

I was having a minor issue, and easiest fix was to update, and I figured it’s been more than a year mine as well. That was two days ago. It completely erased all my power settings causing my laptop to shut down, here n there, changed all my firewall settings and now this bitdefender problem. I guess I’ll try above solutions under safe mode, will that work ya think? Sorry about venting to you, I know you’re not Microsoft.
