Fix: Cannot Access Network Shares after Update 1709

Like all other Microsoft updates, the 1709 Creators Update tagged along with numerous problems as well. One of these problems was the failure to access your network drives or home NAS drives. When trying to access any shared entity (such as a folder) over the network, users get an error stating that the access is unauthenticated even with the correct password.

Solution 1: Installing SBMV1

This error mostly occurs with devices that are not recent and have a different sharing protocol installed i.e. SMBV1. The new windows update has this uninstalled by default which is why you are experiencing the problem due to the vulnerability of the past. We can easily add it using windows features and check if the problem gets solved.

  1. Press Windows + S to launch the search bar. Type “features” in the dialogue box and open the first result which comes forth.

  1. Once in features, expand the category of “SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support”. Make sure that all the options are checked.

  1. Press OK to save changes and exit. Restart your computer and check if the problem got solved.

Solution 2: Editing Group Policy for insecure logins

Another workaround is to edit the group policy for insecure logins. Do note that the group policy editor is a powerful tool and changing keys which you don’t know about can make your computer unusable.

  1. Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. Type “gpedit.msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  2. Once in the editor, navigate to the following path:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Lanman Workstation

  1. At the right side, you will see an entry named “Enable insecure guest logons”. Double-click it to change its properties.

  1. Change the option from “Not Configured” to “Enabled”. Press Apply to save changes and exit. Now restart your computer and check if the problem got solved.

Solution 3: Installing Client for Microsoft Networks

Another workaround is to ensure that the client for Microsoft Networks is installed and running on your computer. Before that installing, we will reset the Winsock context.

  1. Press Windows + S to launch the search application. Type “command prompt” in the dialogue box, right-click on the result and select “Run as administrator”.
  2. Once in the elevated command prompt, execute the following command.

netsh winsock reset

  1. Reboot your computer. After rebooting open the Run application again and type “ncpa.cpl”.
  2. Select the connection, right-click it and select Properties.

  1. Once in the properties, select “Client for Microsoft Networks”, check it and click on the “Install” button. Reboot your computer again after the installation and check if the problem is solved.

Solution 4: Changing HomeGroup Settings

In this workaround, we will try changing the homegroup settings from the client PC (the PC which is sharing the file with others) with a few amendments in the properties of the file being shared.

  1. Press Windows + S to launch the search bar. Type “control panel” in the dialogue box and open the result which comes forth.
  2. Once in the control panel, select the category of “Network and Internet” and further select “Network and Sharing Center”.

  1. Once in the Network and Sharing Center, click on “Change advanced sharing settings” present at the left side of the window.

  1. Select your current profile and check the option under the HomeGroup connections “Use user accounts or passwords to connect to other computers”. Press “Save changes” at the bottom of the screen and exit.

  1. Navigate to the file you are trying to share and open its properties.
  2. Click the button “Share” present under the heading of “Network File and Folder Sharing”.

  1. Click the drop-down and select “Everyone”. Press on the Share button present at the bottom of the screen.

  1. While still in properties, select “Advanced Sharing”.

  1. Make sure that the option “Share this folder” option is checked. Click on “Permissions” present at the bottom of the screen.

  1. Make sure that the permissions block is not blank. In most cases, “Everyone” will be present automatically.

If it is not present, click on Add, select Advanced, and click on “Find Now” present at the right side of the screen. Now Windows will search for all the users available and list them at the bottom of the screen. Highlight “Everyone” and press Ok. Everyone will now be available in the permissions block. Make sure that it is activated. Press Apply to save changes and exit.

Now try accessing the file from another computer and check if our method is successful.

Solution 5: Making sure Public Sharing is turned on

Another reason why your folder isn’t being shared over the network is that your public sharing might be turned off. Even if you turned it on previously before the update, check again as many configurations get reset.

  1. Press Windows + S to launch the search bar. Type “control panel” in the dialogue box and open the result which comes forth.
  2. Once in the control panel, select the category of “Network and Internet” and further select “Network and Sharing Center”.
  3. Once in the Network and Sharing Center, click on “Change advanced sharing settings” present at the left side of the window.
  4. Expand the category of “All networks” and under the heading of “Public folder sharing”, make sure that the correct option is checked “Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders”. Save changes and exit.

Sometimes a restart is required to make sure that all the changes are implemented.

Solution 6: Executing PowerShell Command

In some cases, executing a simple command in an elevated PowerShell seems to do the trick. Therefore, in this step, we will be doing that. For that:

  1. Press “Windows” + “X” and click on “Windows Powershell(Admin)” option.
    Running PowerShell as an administrator
  2. Type in the following command and press “Enter” to execute it.
    Set-SmbServerConfiguration-EnableSMB2Protocol $true
  3. Check to see if the issue persists.
