Fix: Edge responds ‘we can’t reach this page’

Microsoft Edge browser is a brand-new entry by Microsoft in the world of browsers. It was a long-awaited browser for Windows users, as they were extremely disappointed by the performance of Internet Explorer. Microsoft took this quite seriously and introduced the Edge browser to compete with other giants in the market.

A number of users have reported this strange issue relevant to the Edge browser, i.e., it responds with “Hmm, we can’t reach this page” to all the requests that are passed through. However, other browsers seem to work fine at the exact same moment. While checking the network connection, no problem causing this issue has been found. As a result, Edge users are frustrated by this problem, which restricts them from browsing the web.

Reasons Behind Edge’s Error: ‘We Can’t Reach This Page’

There might be numerous reasons for Edge to experience this issue. The most well-known reason is related to the DNS client, which might have been disabled after upgrading to Windows 10.

Based on the reason I mentioned above, there are several methods you should try in order to get Edge back to work. Follow these methods and see if they work.

Method #1: Enabling the DNS Client

DNS Client is important for the internet to function properly. The reason the Edge browser might not be working correctly could be due to the DNS Client being disabled. Therefore, re-enabling it may resolve the issue. Follow the steps below to re-enable the DNS Client.

1. Search for services using Cortana inside Windows 10. When they are displayed in the search results, select ‘Run as administrator‘ by right-clicking on the desired service.

2. Inside the Services Window, locate the DNS Client from a list of services located on the right. Right-click on the DNS Client and select ‘Start.’ This will enable the DNS Client, and the Edge browser will start working properly.

Method #2: Changing DNS Values.

Changing the DNS value might work in most cases where the above-mentioned method doesn’t work. To do this, follow the steps below.

1. Right-click on the Start menu icon, located at the bottom left of the Windows screen, and select ‘Network Connections‘.

2. If you are connected to the internet through a wireless or LAN adapter, right-click on that adapter and select ‘Properties‘.

3. Inside the Properties window, navigate to the Networking tab and select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) from the connections. Click on the Properties button at the bottom.

When you are inside the Properties window, click on the ‘Use the following DNS server addresses‘ radio button and enter the following addresses. Click the ‘OK‘ button afterwards. This should solve the problem for you.

Preferred DNS Server: 8.8.8.8

Alternate DNS Server: 8.8.8.4

Method 3: Checking the Internet Explorer Add-ons

Even though Edge is meant to completely replace Internet Explorer, Microsoft ships Windows 10 with both internet browsers. Resolving this issue with Edge can be accomplished by making a small modification in Internet Explorer.

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools, and select Manage Add-ons.
  3. Once inside, click on Search Providers.
  4. You will see a checkbox labeled ‘Search in the address bar and the search box on the new tab page.‘ Ensure that the checkbox is checked.
  5. Close everything, and try opening the webpage in Edge again.

Do you mean that the solution’s didn’t work? Are you able to browse via Internet Explorer?

None of these worked for me. Microsoft promised a re-imagined browser, but the only thing I can imagine is falling off an Edge.

    Hi Kevin
    Thanks for your article.
I tried both solutions. DNS service was already running in fact, I restarted it just to try. Also rebooted my PC. IE (and everything else) works just nice. Edge stopped working a couple of days ago, It sees no Internet at all.
And it used to work …

      Hi Albert.

Can you disable your antivirus and firewall and then see if Edge responds?

Also when you do ping -t 4.2.2.2 from Command Prompt; what do you get?

      Thanks

I can’t believe you replied so fast, are you for real? ๐Ÿ˜€

I just tried to open a fixed IP (193.9.9.19) – no luck.

        For the ping I get:
        Reply from 4.2.2.2: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=53

          Haha. Yes, i am real.

Ok. Ping indicates you do have access to the outside world from this system.

Can you try accessing the following:

          http://74.125.224.72/

Did you disable your antivirus and firewall?

          Thanks

I have to admit I’m a little reluctant to connect to some random IP address with all my antivirus and firewall disabled. I think you agree that is not advisable.

Of course I have – I’m writing to you on the same system, though I’m using Chrome for this ๐Ÿ˜€

That is a Google’s Address. You can google the address on Chrome to see. Please see if you can access the IP. If it won’t access it; i suggest rebooting into Safe Mode to test Edge.

          Hello Kevin,
I really feel bad about not having trusted you, I hope you understand – this was my initial reaction. I *did* just receive a spontaneous call from ‘Microsoft’ last week, insisting they are calling me because of a ‘problem with my Windows computer’.
Anyway, while I was trying to disable the firewall, I noticed that it said I was on a ‘public network’. Trying to switch that to ‘private network’ I found that I have to activate HomeGroup, but I could not (see attached file).
I started the HomeGroup troubleshooter, it reported finding some errors. If my understanding is right, they came from two virtual network adapters from VMWare Desktop. Troubleshooter finished, everything is working as expected again.
All I can do to thank you for being there is to answer to any of your questions, in case my explanation was not good enough.
          Regards,
          Albert

Your concerns are genuine. There are many tech support scams out there originating from India. I did not mind, and love it when i see people being aware of all the tech support scams. Most people who fall for it are the old aged citizens. Since it is now sorted and my initial guess regarding firewall was sort of spot on, i am happy ๐Ÿ™‚

I have struggled in activating Microsoft Edge for a very long time. Eventually I got to this message of :disabling my antivirus and firewall”. Microsoft Edge is working!!!!!!!!! Question: What do I do from here? I am using McAfee Version 8.8. Shall appreciate guidance. Kobus

If it was due to the AV, then just reinstall the AV or reset rules.

I have a corporate laptop, running Symantec Endpoint Protection v12.1.6. By default, Network Threat Detection / Application Settings was set to block “Microsoft Edge Content Process”. Setting this application to “allow” fixed the problem for me. Kudos to Kevin Arrows for the advice on this page.

So far, so good. Thanks for showing the step by step on how to do this. I saw a bunch of other solutions online, and this has been the only one that seems to work for me.

I have a problem over here. After upgrading my laptop to windows 10, everything worked fine for me, even the Microsoft Edge. But, later on, after like 5 days from installation, i was not able to use Microsoft edge as it always shows the error “Hmm, we can’t reach this page.” to any page i try to access. When i tried typing the “ping http://www.google.co.in” in the command prompt, it says “request timed out” 4 times, and shows 100% loss. But, actually, i am able to access internet in the same laptop but in google chrome(I am even typing this on google chrome) at the same time and all websites work perfectly for me in chrome. I am always connected to my college’s WiFi. I don’t know if this could be of any help, but the last time i remember using Microsoft Edge perfectly was before i installed a VPN software. Please help.

Uninstall the VPN Software and then test?

Did that. it still does not work. i googled the probem some days ago, and it said me to go to this (“HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings”) and delete the “ProxyEnable” which is a “REG_DWORD” type file. Doing so, i was actually able to make the Microsoft edge work, but after the next restart, it did not work again. When i performed the same steps this time, it is of no use.

      Update DNS

    TS
    Thor Sigurdsson Dec 28, 2016

There’s a simpler fix. Open up the properties page for your network connection and disable IPv6. The problem is if DNS returns both an AAAA and an A record, the requestor should try the AAAA record first. Edge does just that, and if you don’t have IPv6 routing, fails. Then it doesn’t try the A record…

    Just my somewhat educated guess.

THIS WAS AN EASY FIX– OPENING NETWORK CONNECTIONS, RIGHT CLICK YOUR INTERNET CONN., SELECT “PROPERTIES” in drop down. AND MODIFY THE INTERNET PROTOCAL 4 TCP: PREFERRED to 8.8.8.8 and ALTERNATE to 8.8.8.4 ; THEN UNCHECK INTERNET PROTOCOL 6 TCP. STOPS DNS SERVER ERRORS. THANK YOU, CC

After all these years, why does Microsoft suck? Maybe the “techs” should be paid more that $15 an hour. Oh wait…
