How to Fix Easy Anti-Cheat Fails to Start in Windows?

If you’re experiencing an issue where Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) fails to open, it is often due to corrupted or missing anti-cheat files, lack of system permissions, or interference from third-party software. The most common cause is file corruption, which prevents the EAC service from launching correctly. In some cases, third-party antivirus programs may flag EAC as a false positive and silently block it from running. This interference can prevent the anti-cheat from initializing or corrupt files during installation.

Now that you’re familiar with the possible causes, let’s go over the solutions to fix this issue.

1. Repair the Easy Anti-Cheat Service

Repairing the service restores essential components required for it to function correctly. This process ensures that the anti-cheat engine can launch without errors and allows the game to initialize properly.

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E) and navigate to the game’s installation folder (typically in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\[Game Name]).
  2. Locate the EasyAntiCheat folder in the game’s directory. EasyAntiCheat folder location in game directory
  3. Inside the folder, find the EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe file.
  4. Right-click the file and select Run as administrator (click “Yes” if prompted by UAC). Running EasyAntiCheat setup as admin
  5. In the Easy Anti-Cheat setup window:
    • Select your game from the list
    • Click Repair Service

  6. After the repair completes, restart your computer for changes to take effect.

2. Verify the Integrity of Game Files

If EAC fails to launch in games like Fortnite or Apex Legends, the issue may stem from corrupted or missing game files. Verifying the game files ensures that all components required by Easy Anti-Cheat are intact. This process will automatically restore any damaged or missing files that could be preventing EAC from initializing.

  1. Open Steam and click Library at the top.
  2. Right-click the game with issues and select Properties. Right-click menu showing Properties option
  3. Click the Installed Files tab, then select Verify integrity of game files. Game file verification button location
  4. Wait for verification to complete (may take 2-10 minutes), then restart your PC and test the game.

3. Run EAC and the Game as Administrator

Easy Anti-Cheat requires elevated permissions to manage anti-cheat services and access protected system files. Without administrator rights, Windows may block critical functions, causing EAC to fail at launch. Running both EAC and the game executable as administrator ensures full access and may resolve the issue.

For Easy Anti-Cheat:

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E) and navigate to where the game is installed (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\[Game Name] or your custom installation path).
  2. Locate and open the EasyAntiCheat folder in the game’s directory.
  3. Right-click EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe and select Run as administrator (click “Yes” if prompted by User Account Control). Running EasyAntiCheat setup as administrator

For Game:

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows key + E) and navigate to your game’s installation folder (typically in C:\Program Files or your Steam/Epic Games library).
  2. Locate the game’s main .exe file (usually named after the game or labeled “Launcher”).
  3. Right-click the .exe file and select Run as administrator (click “Yes” if prompted by User Account Control). Right-click menu showing 'Run as administrator' option

4. Reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat

If Easy Anti-Cheat still fails to launch after other fixes, a complete reinstall can resolve deeper issues caused by persistent file corruption or improper installation. A fresh installation restores all essential components and ensures the anti-cheat system operates as expected.

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to your game’s installation folder (typically in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\[Game Name]).
  2. Locate and open the EasyAntiCheat folder.
  3. Right-click EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe and select Run as administrator (click “Yes” if prompted by UAC). Running EAC setup as administrator
  4. In the EAC setup window, click Uninstall and follow the prompts to remove it completely.
Note: This only removes the Easy Anti-Cheat component—it does not uninstall the game or delete any of your saved data.
    EAC uninstall option
  5. Run EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe again as administrator.
  6. From the dropdown menu, select your game title (ensure it matches the game you’re troubleshooting).
  7. Click Install Easy Anti-Cheat and wait for the progress bar to complete. EAC installation screen
  8. Restart your computer to finalize the installation and apply changes.

If Easy Anti-Cheat still refuses to launch, it’s possible that residual game files or misconfigured dependencies are still interfering with its functionality—even after repairing or reinstalling EAC. In such cases, a full game reinstall is recommended. This ensures that all game-related files, including EAC components, are freshly installed and properly integrated—resolving any lingering conflicts or corruption.
