How to Fix Discord Stuck at RTC Connecting?
When Discord is stuck at RTC Connecting, it indicates a failure in the connection between users. The error suggests that Discord is attempting to establish a connection but cannot complete it. This happens due to misconfigured Discord audio settings, a weak internet connection, problematic Discord files, and misconfigured network settings. These are the causes that could contribute to this issue.
Another issue is that, oftentimes, Discord gets stuck at Connecting upon launching, which is also caused by the factors mentioned earlier. So if you are encountering the same issue, apart from RTC connecting, you can still follow this guide to resolve the issue.
We strongly recommend checking the Discord server status and restarting your Wi-Fi router before proceeding with the solutions below. Restarting the router will re-establish the Real-Time Communication (RTC) session, which might resolve the issue. This will also help if your Discord is stuck on ‘Connecting’ upon launching.
1. Reset Voice Settings
If you found no issues with your internet connection and the Discord servers are stable and working properly, the problem must lie in the Discord or network settings. Since misconfigured voice settings are one of the main contributors, we can start fixing this issue by resetting the Discord voice settings.
- Open Discord and navigate to Settings.
- Select Voice & Video from the left sidebar.
- Now scroll down to the bottom, and click Reset Voice Settings.
- Then, click OK to confirm the action.
2. Enable Quality Of Service High Packet Priority and Debug Logging
Quality of Service is a setting in Discord that indicates to the router that the packets transmitted by Discord are high-priority. This can reduce latency and improve call quality by marking the voice packets with higher importance. However, enabling it can also cause connection issues if the network cannot manage QoS properly. If the issue is resolved after turning on the feature ‘Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority,’ then you should continue with this setting; otherwise, turn this setting off.
Additionally, you can also disable Debug Logging, which saves debug logs and allows users to upload log files to Discord support for troubleshooting. This has worked for some affected users, so we recommend disabling Debug Logging alongside the ‘Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority’ feature.
- Open Discord’s settings and navigate to Voice and Video from the left.
- Scroll down until you see the Quality of Service section.
- Once you find it, toggle on the option ‘Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority‘.
- Then, scroll down to the bottom and disable the Debug Logging feature.
- Once done, check if the RTC connection issue is resolved.
3. Clean Reinstall Discord
A clean reinstallation of Discord will remove all the existing files, including the corrupted ones that might be interfering with the RTC connection or preventing Discord from connecting to the server. By completely reinstalling Discord, you ensure there are no corrupted files that could cause this issue. To do so, follow the steps:
- Close Discord completely by navigating to the Task Manager.
- Search for %appdata% in the Windows search and open the folder.
- Navigate to the Roaming folder and delete the Discord folder.
- Once done, open the Run program by pressing the Win + R keys simultaneously.
- Type appwiz.cpl in the input box and click OK. This will open the Programs and Features of the Control Panel.
- Here, right-click the Discord application and select Uninstall.
- Once done, download the Discord installer from the official site.
- Then, run the installer to install the Discord application.
4. Change DNS Settings
DNS, or Domain Name System, directs network requests by reading domain names and converting them into IP addresses. If your DNS is slow, it can prevent your network request from reaching the server. However, changing the DNS can resolve the issue by directing your network request through a faster and more reliable DNS server, such as Google or Cloudflare.
- Click the Start Menu and type Control Panel.
- Open the Control Panel and navigate to Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
- Once navigated, click Change Adapter Settings from the left sidebar.
- Right-click the network adapter, whether it is Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and select Properties.
- Here, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
- In the Properties window, choose Use the following DNS server addresses and type the Google DNS server, which is 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.
- Once done, click OK to save the DNS settings. Now check if the connection issue is fixed.
Lastly, resetting the network settings may be the final solution to your issue. Misconfigured network settings, such as proxy, can lead to connectivity issues while using Discord. Therefore, as a last resort, make sure to try resetting the network settings. However, if you are encountering this issue on a browser, you should try switching your browser to prevent this issue from happening again.
