DeepSeek Confirms R2 Won’t Launch on March 17

DeepSeek has denied all rumors of its “R2” AI model launching on March 17 after multiple reports have claimed that the Hangzhou tech giant might move up the launch ahead of its planned May release.

The company that caused a trillion-dollar “freakout” is expected to release its R2 AI model later this year. The DeepSeek R1 stirred a panic in AI markets after reports emerged that the Chinese AI company had managed to train the model using considerably less financial resources.
Now, DeepSeek’s next AI model, the R2, is scheduled for a May release, and will reportedly come with better coding capabilities, and reasoning support in languages other than English. The company has officially, via its corporate consulting user account, confirmed that rumors of an early release are false.

In January, when the R1 was released to the public, it rivaled the likes of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude’s capabilities while costing not only far less to make, but with limited resources to train the model in the first place. It seemed as if DeepSeek may have found a workaround against the limited supply and compute power available amid the NVIDIA ban.
More so, reports are pouring in concerning how the U.S. may ban the Chinese AI startup from operating in the country. U.S. Navy and NASA have already banned the app over security concerns, and the government may potentially limit its access to the general public in the future.
