Meaning & Fixes: “Comments On This Post Have Been Limited”

TL;DR
  • If you see "Comments On This Post Have Been Limited," it means the poster has restricted comments to specific users.
  • There is no way to fix this issue, as it's technically not even an issue, but rather a choice from the poster that only they can change.
  • You can limit comments on your own Instagram posts using two methods: Comment Control for permanent restrictions and the Limit Feature for temporary limitations.

Comments play an important role if you’ve ever managed an Instagram page or any other social media platform. They help create conversations between creators and their audiences, but they can also be a space for negativity, trolling, and unwanted attention.

Because of this, Instagram allows page owners to limit comments on their posts to avoid issues. On the flip side, if you’re trying to leave a positive comment but run into the message “comments on this post have been limited“, don’t worry—this guide will help you understand and deal with it.

What Does “Comments On This Post Have Been Limited” Mean?

If you see the “Comments On This Post Have Been Limited” message when you try to comment on a reel or image, it likely means the post owner has chosen to limit comments on that post. In short, only selected users are allowed to comment, and you’re not on that list.

Sadly, there isn’t a workaround or “trick” to bypass these restrictions. The only way to be able to comment is to be included in the group the post owner has approved.

How To Limit Comments On Instagram

Whether you’re a well-known content creator or just a regular Instagram user, you have the ability to limit who can comment on your posts. This feature is available to everyone, regardless of your follower count or account age. If you want to limit comments on your own Instagram posts, you have two options.

1. Comment Control

The Comment Control feature is a good choice if you want a long-term restriction on your page. It allows you to prevent certain people from commenting on any of your posts until you turn this option off. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile and tap on the three lines at the top right.
    Tap on the three lines
  2. Tap on the “Settings and privacy” option.
    Head to settings & privacy
  3. Next, tap on Comments.
    Tap on comments
  4. Here, you can block comments from specific accounts by adding their usernames to your blocked commenters list. You’ll also find the option to allow or block GIF comments under your posts.

2. Limit Feature

The Limit feature works a bit differently. It doesn’t just restrict comments but also limits who can message you. The limits are temporary and can range from 1 day up to 4 weeks.

Here’s how to turn on the Limit feature:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile.
  2. Tap on the three lines at the top right.
    Tap on the three lines
  3. Go to Settings & privacy > Limited Interactions.
Settings & privacy > Limited interactions
  4. Here, you can choose who you want to limit.

  • Accounts That Are Not Following You: Anyone who isn’t following you won’t be able to comment on your posts or send you direct messages.
  • Recent Followers: Anyone who started following you within the past week will not be able to contact you through messages or comments.

You can also set how long you want the limits to be active. Choose from options like “Minimum” (about 1 day) to “Maximum” (up to 4 weeks).

If you ever change your mind or feel that the situation has improved, you can always come back to this menu and remove the limits.

Benefits of Limiting Instagram Comments

Whether you want to keep your environment friendly or avoid online arguments, limiting who can comment on your posts has several benefits. Let’s look at a few:

  • Tackling Spam: We all dislike spam comments, especially those tagging multiple people for ads. Bots can take this to the next level and flood your posts. Using comment restrictions can cut down on spam significantly.
  • Positive Environment: If you want to keep trolls out of your comment section, you can limit comments to friends or trusted people, helping maintain a supportive space.
  • Manageable Comments: If you receive too many comments and find it overwhelming to reply to everyone, limiting comments makes it easier to manage your conversations.
  • Handling Controversial Topics: If you’re posting about sensitive or hot-button issues, like the Israel-Palestine conflict, limiting comments can help avoid heated debates or arguments in your comment section.
