Fix: Cannot Access WD My Cloud Account on Windows 10

When trying to access a WD My Cloud device from a Windows 10 computer, you might see the error “Windows cannot access \WDMYCLOUD” with the code 0x80070035. This means the computer can’t find or connect to the My Cloud device on your network.

The most common reason is that your Windows Credential Manager doesn’t have the right username and password saved for the My Cloud. Other possible reasons include problems with the network sharing settings called SMB, or Windows blocking access if you try to connect without a password.

1. Add a Windows Credential for your WD My Cloud account

The easiest and most effective solution is to add your WD My Cloud account as a Windows Credential on your computer.

  1. Right-click on the Start Menu to open the WinX Menu.
  2. Click on Control Panel to open it.

wd - 1

  1. In the Control Panel, locate and click on Credential Manager.

wd - 2

  1. Click on Windows Credentials.

wd - 3

  1. Click on the Add a Windows credential link in the top right corner.

wd - 4

  1. Enter the network name of your WD My Cloud device in the Internet or network address field.
Enter your WD My Cloud username and password in the corresponding fields.
    Click Save.

wd - 5

  1. Close the Control Panel.
  2. Restart your computer. When your computer starts up, you should be able to access your WD My Cloud account without any problems.

2. Fix the issue using the Registry Editor

If Method 1 doesn’t work, you can try editing your computer’s registry—don’t worry, the steps are straightforward.

  1. Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run command.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

wd - 6

  1. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation in the left pane.

wd - 7

  1. Click on the LanmanWorkstation key to show its contents.
  2. In the right pane, right-click an empty area, go to New, and select DWORD (32-bit) Value.

wd - 8

  1. Name the new value AllowInsecureGuestAuth.

wd - 9

  1. Double-click this value, set its data to 1, then click OK.

wd - 10

  1. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer. After restarting, you should now have full access to your WD My Cloud account.

3. Network Reset

Many users in the comments have reported success with this method on Windows 10:

  1. Hold down the Windows key and press “I” to open Settings.
  2. Select Network & Internet.

  1. Make sure the Status section is selected in the left pane.
  2. Scroll down and choose Network Reset, then confirm by clicking Reset Now.

Follow these steps, and you’ll be on your way to accessing your WD My Cloud account again—no technical expertise required! For more help, feel free to check the [official WD support page](https://support-en.wd.com/) if you run into any other issues.

Hello Kevin – sorry to hijack this. I am having the same trouble as quintel. When I double click on the wd drive I keep getting an error message saying that windows cannot access //WDMYCLOUD. I have tried so many things including factory resets etc. If you are able to help it would be very much appreciated. Rgds

Hello Kevin – many thanks for your reply, I was away for a few days so didn’t see it.
The IP for my drive shows up as 192.168.0.4 this is what I pinged, and it says that 4 packets were sent and received at 2ms. I can send you further info if you wish – screen prints etc…
The drive does not show up in ‘disk management’ tho?
          Your help is much appreciated.

Good article. There are various levels of issues with local network. I run into host names not resolving to IP’s on my LAN on occasions. I can assess everything using IP’s. It effect only single local computer not resolving IP’s. It comes and goes and it is related to network adapters and drivers. I got this issue again on my USB -> LAN adapters. It works with WiFi. I’m tempted to do network reset.

I had a similar problem on my 2TB WDMyCloud. All other Windows devices and Android phones had full access to the drive – but Win10 access stopped working (after one of those magic system updates).

I solved it using the following:
Go to: Settings > Network & Internet > Status
    – then select the “Network reset” link towards the bottom of the page
It will do its thing and then it will reboot the PC. Once rebooted you will need to re-enter your WiFi password etc.

Please post back here if this helps…

Tried options 1 and 2 with no luck. Tried Reimage and it also did nothing to remedy this. The My Cloud drive does show in windows explorer’s Network “folder” in the tree pane on the left side as a subfolder to Nework (my computer is listed as 1st subfolder, NASDRIVEEX2A is 2nd subfolder).

Clicking once on the NASDRIVEEX2A folder results in this pop-up error:

\NASDRIVEEX2A is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.
The remote procedure call failed and did not execute.

Oddly enough, if I then click on NETWORK in the left pane (parrent folder to NASDRIVEEX2A), here is what I see in the right pane:

    Computer (2)
    Friscoan4 NASDRIVEEX2A

[some other classifications of devices, printers, etc.]

    Storage (1)
    NASDRIVEEX2A

Is the extra info, “The remote procedure call failed and did not execute.” a clue as to where the problem may lie?

(note, I set this PC to Metered Service to halt windows updates, so I actually have 1510 right now and therefore I do not have a “reset network” option. My issues started after moving to a new house from a fiber modem to a cable modem; everything else worked A-OK but for some reason the change in (router/)modem has hosed my ability to map a drive to My Cloud NAS).

Added the entire 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 LAN to the dmz, made no difference. Got tired of messing with it last night so I bit the bullet, turned off “Metered Service” and went though 14 hours of Windows Updates attempts, errors, fixes, reconfigurations, reinstallations. After getting Creators edition stable (and still no resolution for the WD mapping problem) I did a RESET on my network. 2 hours later I had my WD mapping working again. So it seems the RESET works, but you gotta have a recent edition of Win10 to find the RESET option in the first place.

See post below, by Kim Rowden. It’s a Win10 built-in function. You need the latest version of Win10 (anniverdary or creators) to even see the reset option.

I had success with option #3 with one adjustment. After resetting the network and restarting the computer, the network folder was empty. I had to restart my modem for the WD Cloud to see me. Once I did that, everything came back on. The solution was easy. Getting there was a Bi***. Thank you for the ease you showed the steps.

Method 1 worked for me, but I just wanted to let people know that they have to make sure they enter the username and password for the admin. I had another account for myself, and I was entering that one and wasn’t working. It worked when I entered the admin one. Thanks so much for this! I spent 3 hours trying to figure this out.

    Go into this address: HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlNetworkProviderOrder
Click on the provider order entry and change the order to accommodate WDMyCloud first. Save your settings and check if it helps.
Also, make sure that you have never disabled any windows service to increase performance because there are certain services that users disable in order to increase performance and in return this functionality is disturbed

Noooooo much easier if you do thisSo, As a proud owner of a now EOL WDBA Series MyBook. I had to post what I just did.
New PC, needed the windows version of WDMyCloud.
Downloaded the install from the EOL page for the product and installed it.Soon as it ran this issue popped up and it all flashed back to me as I have been really just using on network as a backup storage point, no need for the program. So anyway, all the annoyance of this pop up came back and I was determined to resolve.
No matter what you do, when you trust the cert and let windows decide where to put it.
Windows, looks at it and goes, duh I told you its untrusted, so it puts it in the untrusted container.
Next time go ahead and add it to computer and choose not to let Windows do it and you follow the prompt and stick it in the “Trusted People” container.
Walla, message is gone for good.
What happens in 3 years when the cert actually expires? By then I will have a new WD NAS and this, if still working will be back to more mundane duties on my network. With this fix you posted you are allowing Insecure Guest Authorization for any Cert.
    NOT A GOOD THING!!!

I have this issue and I’ve tried all three of these. We have a new router. My wife can access all of the bits on the WD drive that we would expect. I did have access, but now I am getting the error message, warning of multople connections etc. I have the admin account and I am using the correct credentials. It is driving me nuts! Any ideas please?

Can you go to Command Prompt as Administrator and type this command: “net use” Identify your drive and then use this command to disconnect it: “net use drive letter /delete” After that restart your computer. Then re-add the mapped network drive.

Had a problem a while ago where one laptop couldn’t connect to my WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra which was solved by adding Windows Credentials as in Method 1. Following the latest updates I lost access again, the Windows trouble shooter said my network was configured correctly but the device wasn’t responding. Following this post I tried Method 2, the registry edit, that made no difference but Method 3, network reset solved it. Thank you so much for these instructions, they’ve really helped me out 🙂
