How to Fix BitLocker Recovery Error with Trace ID?

The BitLocker Recovery Error with a Trace ID (e.g., XXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX) occurs when Windows detects a potential security issue and enters recovery mode. When BitLocker is active, it encrypts the drive and requires a 48-digit recovery key to unlock access. Until this key is entered, your system and data remain inaccessible.

This error is commonly caused by TPM (Trusted Platform Module) issues, firmware or hardware changes, or even when OneDrive storage is full, which may interfere with secure boot measurements.

Although this security layer helps protect sensitive data, it can result in permanent data loss if the recovery key isn’t readily available.

Follow the steps below to restore access to your system:

1. Retrieve BitLocker Recovery Key from Microsoft Account

Microsoft automatically backs up BitLocker recovery keys for devices linked to your Microsoft account. This allows you to retrieve your 48-digit recovery key online, provided the device was previously connected to your account. After verifying your identity, you can unlock your encrypted drive and regain system access.

  1. Open a browser on a separate device (not the locked one).
  2. Visit the Microsoft Account website: https://account.microsoft.com
  3. Log in using the Microsoft account associated with the locked device.
  4. Click on “Devices” from the left menu.
  5. Find the device currently showing the BitLocker recovery screen.
  6. Select “Info & Support” then click “Manage recovery keys”.
  7. Enter the verification code when prompted by Microsoft.
  8. Once verified, locate the correct recovery key that matches your device.
  9. Return to the locked device and enter the full 48-digit recovery key.

2. Free up OneDrive Storage to Access BitLocker

If your OneDrive storage is full, it may cause a sync error that Windows misinterprets as a threat, triggering BitLocker recovery mode. Freeing up space resolves these conflicts and disables the false security alert.

While not officially documented by Microsoft, many users report that a full OneDrive account triggered unexpected BitLocker recovery mode due to sync failures. This workaround has resolved the issue on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices using cloud sync.
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Search for Microsoft OneDrive and open the official website.
  3. Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to the affected device.
  4. Click the “Settings” icon, then select “Options”.
  5. Click on the OneDrive option next to “Free up space”.
  6. Delete unnecessary files and folders to free up space.
  7. Once space is cleared, log out of your BitLocker screen.
  8. Wait 1–2 hours and then restart your PC.
