How to Add, Remove, Manage and Assign Roles in Discord?

Role management in Discord is one of its most powerful features, setting it apart from many similar applications. Roles can be helpful for organizing your server, giving members special permissions, or simply letting people choose fun colors for their usernames. There’s so much you can do with roles on Discord servers.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to create, assign, edit, set permissions, and auto-assign roles in your Discord server.

1. Create New Roles in Your Discord Server

The first step is to create roles on your server. Roles help admins and members interact more efficiently, and you can set up different roles for different purposes. Members who don’t have a role will appear in the online section without a label.

  1. Open Discord on your computer or browser and log in to your account.
  2. Select the server from the icons on the left. Click your server’s name at the top, and choose Server Settings from the menu.

  3. Click on the Roles tab in the left panel, then click the Create Role button.

  4. Type a role name and choose a color for that role.

  5. Next, you can set the permissions for this role, or you can skip this step for now and set them later.
  6. You can also add members to this role while creating it, or add them later.

  7. Your new role will now appear in the Roles section of the server settings.

2. Remove Roles in Your Discord Server

Removing a role is just as easy as creating one. Keep in mind, you can only delete roles that are lower than your own role’s position. If you are a moderator and there’s a higher role above you, you won’t be able to remove it unless you’re the server owner.

  1. Open Discord and go to your server. Click the server’s name and then choose Server Settings.
    Opening server’s settings
  2. Click on Roles in the left pane. Find the role you want to remove, click the More icon (three dots), and choose Delete.

  3. Click Okay to confirm. The role will be removed from your server.

3. Assign a Role to a Member

Before you can assign a role to someone, you’ll need to have that role created. If you’re not the server owner but have admin rights, you can only assign roles that are lower than your own role.

  1. Open Discord on your system, and select the server where you want to assign roles.
  2. Click on the server’s name and choose Server Settings.
    Opening server’s settings
  3. Go to the Members option under User Management. Find the member, click the plus icon next to their name, and select the role you want to assign.

4. Edit a Role in Your Discord Server

You can also edit role names or adjust additional settings in your server settings. For example, you can make a role show up separately in the member list, or control if the role can be mentioned by others.

  1. Open Discord and go to your server. Click the server’s name and select Server Settings.
    Opening server’s settings
  2. Click Roles in the left panel. Hover over the role you want to edit and click the Edit button (pencil icon).

  3. Under the Display tab, you can rename the role, set it to show separately in the member list, or enable/disable @mention for this role.

5. Set Permissions for Roles

You can control what members with a specific role are allowed to do on your server by setting their permissions. This is very useful for giving admins and moderators more control, while keeping things simple for regular members. You can also set permissions for specific channels to control who can send messages, share links, or post images.

  1. Open Discord and your server. Click on the server’s name in the top-left and choose Server Settings.
    Opening server’s settings
  2. Go to Roles in the left panel and click the Edit icon for any role.

  3. In the Permissions tab, you can adjust all available permissions for this role.
  4. Remember: managing important features should only be allowed for moderators and admins.

  6. Now, select the Permission option in the left menu and then pick the role you want. Set the permissions for that role, and those settings will apply only in that channel.
