Google has been working hard to add new features to its popular Google Maps service. Recently Android users received a floating scrolling bar of search categories and the ability to reply to customer reviews.
One of the popular demands made by users was the Street View feature for mobile devices. This handy feature is already available for Google Maps on the web. It provides a detailed overview of the exact location of your destination. Google has finally decided to listen to the demand and added the Street View functionality to the Android version.
You can find the Street View exploration functionality through the map layers FAB. Tap on the top-right corner of your screen to open it. Previously, there were only two sections available on your screen named Map Details and Map Type. In addition to these two sections, now you will find a new Explore section as well. This section has a Street View layer.
Tapping on the layer will activate the Street View mode in your Android app. You just need to tap on anywhere to open the Street View viewer. You will see the blue lines as soon as you zoom in to view individual streets. However, the application will show them in a darker shade when you zoom out. There might be some areas that do not support Street View, such areas will display the color of your map type.
The new Street View layer is available in the latest stable version of Google Maps 10.23.4. However, the functionality is not currently released for iOS users.
Google Maps To Offer Transit Directions
Google has also announced another feature that will allow the users to easily navigate their route with the help of different modes. Google Maps now offers transit directions as well. The transit tab will get a Mixed modes feature that will provide cycling options and ride-sharing.
The Google Maps app will provide some useful information including the types of rides, Uber’s cost, ride-sharing, and the time and cost required by your trip. Additionally, details about the expected traffic, bus or train are included as well. However, you will be required to use the respective apps of Lyft or Uber to book a ride.
The search giant plans to offer the tool to iOS, Android and other devices in the next few weeks. The feature will be available to 30 countries around the world.
