Xiaomi Flagship 12 Series Smartphones Launch Globally Starting at Just $649

Xiaomi has finally launched its flagship series for the year, including 3 phones: Xiaomi 12 Pro, Xiaomi 12, and Xiaomi 12X. The phones feature an overall improvement from last year, with regards to the camera setup, SoC and a few other things. Design wise, there’s little change from last year, except the back camera array redesign and a centrally placed punch hole front camera.

Xiaomi 12 Pro

Xiaomi 12 Pro

Xiaomi 12 Pro is the most premium offering of the series, starting at USD 999. The phone has all the bells and whistles one would expect from a Xiaomi flagship, including the latest Snapdragon Gen 1 SoC, a curved WQHD+ display and a very capable camera setup with the IMX707 sensor. The Xiaomi 12 Pro is in-fact the first phone with a IMX707 sensor, which is a refreshed IMX700 with marginal improvements.

This advanced camera system setup improves light capturing capabilities by 49% compared to the previous generation. This improved capability together with Xiaomi’s own Night Mode algorithm, Xiaomi 12 Pro excels in extreme low-light scenarios and allows snappier shots.

The phone also features a quad speaker setup with two tweeters and two woofers, and will be offered in two variants: 8GB+256GB, and 12GB+256GB.

Xiaomi 12

Xiaomi 12

The Xiaomi 12 is a slight step down from the Pro, although starting at just USD 749, this can make more practical sense for some people. The phone retains most of 12 Pro’ grunt, while making some concessions.

The Xiaomi 12 retains the flagship Snapdragon Gen 1 SoC from the 12 Pro and also shares a similar 32MP in-display selfie camera. The major differences are in the back camera and display department. The Xiaomi 12 features a 6.28-inch 120Hz FHD+ display, which is also a step-down from last year’s Mi 11, with a 2.5K display. To be fair, the Xiaomi 12 will retail slightly cheaper than the Mi 11’s launch price.

The camera setup is also different from the 12 Pro, and the main camera sensor is the IMX766. It also loses out on the 50MP ultra-wide and telephoto lens, instead featuring a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a 5MP Macro camera. Thankfully the phone retains most of the charging options from the 12 Pro, including 67W wired and 50W wireless charging.

Xiaomi 12X

Xiaomi 12X

This is the cheapest offering of the 12 series phones, starting at USD 649. The Xiaomi 12X features an almost identical design with the Xiaomi 12, with a similar display. The biggest concession to match the lower price point comes from the Snapdragon 870 SoC. The Snapdragon 870 is essentially a rebranded Snapdragon 865+, which was released in 2020. That is not to say the Snapdragon 870 is slow by any means, but a step-down nonetheless.

Coming to the camera, the 12X shares a similar set-up with the Xiaomi 12, with a 50MP main lens, 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP macro lens. The phone also lacks wireless charging and is limited to 67W wired charging. Also, unlike the two other phones, the Xiaomi 12X won’t feature Android 12 on launch, and will run MIUI 13 based on Android 11 out of the box.

MIUI 13 focuses on improving core functions, with an overall fluidity increase of 52%. Further enhancing its self-developed Focused Algorithms, Atomized Memory, and Liquid Storage, the new system focuses on optimizing computing capabilities for core apps during heavy usage. MIUI 13 prevents and reduces deterioration of read-write capabilities through Atomized Memory and Liquid Storage technology by 5% over a 36-month period—prolonging the lifespan of devices.
