Xbox One and Steam Cross-Play Feature Might Be in The Works

Cross-play has become very popular these days with games like Fortnite and Rocket League implementing this feature. Gamers don’t have to worry about which console they own or what console their friends own with the cross-play feature, hence making it a very favorable option. Historically, cross-play titles between consoles have been very limited.

Xbox And Steam Cross-Play

But with Microsoft’s push for cross-play this year we can speculate that there will be more development in the cross-play industry in the near future, this speculation is also aided by recent findings from a user on ResetEra. This user discovered added client system files in steam’s latest beta update. These files suggest cross-play functionality between Xbox One and Steam.

Steam Database Source – Github

One of the files in the Steam Open Source Multiplayer Matchmaking files contained some info about pairing with Xbox games. Multiple Xbox titles already have cross-play with Windows, however this is different. This is built into Steam as an open-source feature which allows further possibilities for cross-play. This comes as very good news to gamers who have been impatiently waiting for cross-play to become a bigger thing.

Cross-play is also further being expanded to more developers. As Fortnite’s Cross-play technology is being distributed to game developers for free.

Sony’s stance on cross-play

Sony has had a very conservative stance on cross-play. Sony had previously blocked cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One on multiple games Like Minecraft, Rocket League and Fortnite. After Sony’s CEO publicly stated that the PlayStation 4 remains the best experience for users. Sony went back on their word and later this year had enabled cross-play between PS4 and the Xbox one and Nintendo Switch, only for Fortnite.

Benefits to Cross-Play

Gamers around the world are hoping that cross-play technology be implemented into each and every game in the future. This will allow people to play with their friends regardless of what platform they own.

Cross-play also increases game longevity. As a multiplayer game can only survive if there are players playing it. All we can do now is wish that these companies can sort out their differences and enable cross-play for future titles.
