While online gaming has expanded beyond what we saw a couple of years back, it does bring with it a dark side. Negative comments, frustrating emotions and slurs being thrown at one another are just the tip of the iceberg. Not to mention, racial abuse continues to be a source of problem for people involved in the space. Now, while companies have pushed towards curbing these, we have seen a lot of cross-play in recent years. Games like Fortnite and PubG have allowed people to have an online gaming presence easily as well. Therefore, as per an article on Xbox Wire, the three main players: Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo are joining hands to make sure the online community is a better place for all.
According to the post, the Corporate Vice President, Dave McCarthy explains how there are issues in the online space. He adds that there must be things done in order to make it a safe space. He claims that this space belongs to all of us and all the companies involved have the same goal. Therefore, they are working together in order to make it just that.
The “Game” Plan
They dissect the process into three main aspects: Prevention, Partnership and Responsibility. For the first part, they add that they would add controls for both gamers and their parents to make sure they have a flawless experience. Additionally, there would be more warnings and strict monitoring in order to help gamers towards this goal.
Secondly, in partnership, they claim that it is their joint platform: the online space. Therefore steps would be taken by all three players into research and development of tools which help the end-users. Resources would be shared and other partnerships made with rating agencies to make sure all titles are rated right and monitored well. Finally, we look at the responsibility aspect which shows how we have created this space and the negativity that pours out of it. It is now on to the industry to make sure that they find a way to regulate it and make it a safe zone. The online gaming space should be a welcoming one, not where people are scrutinized or harassed for not following the status quo.
