Fortnite, the current posterboy of Battle Royale games is seemingly coming to WeGames on July 24th. If you don’t live in China, you probably haven’t heard of WeGames. Simply put, it’s Tencent’s version of steam for Chinese users. This launch was announced by the company on twitter.
This launch is probably in-line with Tencent bringing WeGames to overseas users, it’s video game store and social media platform. It will be launched for Hong Kong first, according to South China Morning Post.
As you probably know, Tencent is one of the largest companies in the world and they hold shares in many big game studios, including Epic Games, the developers of Fortnite. Fortnite being on WeGames will help the company find a steady user base for it’s platform and give steam some competition in the Global market, which it has virtually dominated up until now. The global version of the platform also won’t suffer from strict Chinese censorship laws, this will give the company more freedom in adding titles to the platform.
Tencent’s expansion overseas seems to be largely in response to Valve’s expansion in China by teaming up with developer Perfect World and launch a Chinese version of steam. Neither companies have given a launch date yet.
