Valve Cancelling Steam Controller Orders As Stock Runs Low

Last week, Valve announced that it is ending production of the Steam Controller. Released in 2015, the unique device strayed away from the traditional controller design and attracted a lot of attention. Unfortunately, it seems that the controller failed to satisfy Valve’s expectations, as the company is now selling the controllers for $5 a pop. The attempt to empty the inventory didn’t go as planned, however, as customers report having their orders cancelled due to stock issues.

People who availed the great value deal are claiming that Valve is cancelling their orders. A ResetEra user contacted Steam Support about the issue and received the following message:

“During our recent sale, we mistakenly took more orders for the Steam Controller than we were able to fulfill,” reads the message. “As we are no longer producing this product, we are unable to send you a Steam Controller and have refunded your purchase.”

Clearly Valve’s stock of Steam Controllers wasn’t enough to meet the high demand. The deal is now obviously over, but prior to its launch, the company did post a “Limited quantity remaining” warning. Furthermore, the Steam listing noted that Valve were receiving a “high volume of orders”, so it definitely expected this scenario. Despite this warning, some customers obviously aren’t happy with the cancellation of their order. As more and more pending orders are cancelled, Steam users have resorted to dropping negative reviews on the controller’s Steam page.

Although it wasn’t exactly the most popular choice as a full-priced controller, it seems that a lot of people are happy paying $5 for it. The Steam Controller featured dual trackpads, haptic feedback, ergonomic design, and the ability to customize it to your liking. Despite the array of features, however, the Xbox 360 controller still outranked the Steam Controller.

Steam Support explained that refunds have already been issued for all orders that were cancelled. So if you were one of the few who ordered the controller, check your email for some peace of mind.

Thanks, VG247.
