How to Update Xiaomi Devices to Globalized Miui 9

Xiaomi has released its latest software version, Miui 9, which has been made available for a good handful of its Android devices. However, the software has been initially released in China, meaning that Xiaomi device owners outside China who flash the update will have a Chinese-language system UI, and several Chinese bloatware apps.

In this guide, I will walk you through how to update your Xiaomi Android device to the latest Miui 9, and globalize it into your language.

Download MIUI 9

How to Flash the Miui 9 Update

First you’ll need to download the Miui 9 ROM for your Xiaomi device from the above links, and save it on your computer.

Now connect your Xiaomi device to your PC via USB, and copy the downloaded ROM to the “downloaded_rom” folder on your Xiaomi device’s internal storage.

On your phone’s screen, go into Explorer app > Storage > downloaded_rom. Tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner, and choose the updated ROM.

The installation process will begin automatically, and your device will restart after the process is finished.

How to Globalize the Miui 9 Update

After you have installed the Miui 9 update, everything is going to be in Chinese language. So we will need to flash TWRP recovery, but this process depends on which Xiaomi device you have – Appuals has a guide for the Xiaomi Mi5 bootloader unlock and TWRP flashing process.

Once you have TWRP flashed onto your device and the bootloader has been unlocked, you’ll also need to root the device with something like Magisk or SuperSU.

Once you’ve performed these steps, you simply need to go into the build.prop file and open it with Android text editor. Add or modify the following lines at the end of the build.prop file:

ro.product.mod_device=scorpio_mam_global

ro.product.locale.language=it

ro.product.locale.region=IT

persist.sys.timezone=Europe/Rome

persist.sys.language=it

persist.sys.region=IT

ro.product.locale.language=it

So basically where you see “IT” it means Italy, so change those to your country. This is based on the ISO 3166 country code list, which can be found here.

Where you see “scorpio_mam_global”, this is for Mi Note 2. So change this to your device:

  • aries | Mi 2
  • pisces | Mi 3 – TD
  • cancro | Mi 3 / Mi 4 – LTE/WCDMA
  • ferrari | Mi 4i
  • libra | Mi 4c
  • aqua | Mi 4s
  • gemini | Mi 5
  • virgo | Mi Note
  • leo | Mi Note Pro
  • scorpio |Mi Note 2
  • hydrogen | Mi MAX 32gb
  • helium | Mi MAX Pro (64gb/128gb)
  • oxygen | Mi MAX2
  • lithium | Mi MIX
  • capricorn | Mi 5s
  • natrium | Mi 5s Plus
  • sagit | Mi 6
  • tiffany | Mi 5x
  • song / meri | Mi 5c
  • santoni | Redmi 4X

Save the build.prop and reboot your phone for the changes to take effect – all the Chinese content from system apps like music, browser, etc. will completely disappear.
