Tim Cook Praises Sony For its Long-Standing Cooperation on iPhone Cameras

Today, Apple CEO Tim Cook officially praised Sony for its long-standing collaboration in developing cutting-edge camera sensors for more than ten generations of the iPhone.

As part of the CEO’s supplier tour of Japan, Tim Cook tweeted an acknowledgment that Apple employs Sony image sensors in its iPhones. Cook wrote, “We’ve been partnering with Sony for over than a decade to create the leading camera sensors for iPhone,” and he thanked Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida for taking him on a tour of the Kumamoto factory. Cook is pictured being shown the smartphone owned by his business.

Although Apple rarely discloses the precise manufacturers of the hardware parts that go into its iPhones, those who closely track the firm’s supply chain know that the business frequently uses Sony camera parts. The iPhone 6’s camera sensor was purportedly used by Apple, and subsequent hardware disassemblies by organizations like iFixit have shown Sony-made parts in succeeding iPhone models.

Cook’s tweet hints that Apple and Sony have a close working relationship, and reports to that effect already indicate that the Japanese company will contribute to upcoming Apple products.

This cooperation appears to be here to stay, as seen by Tim Cook’s visit to Sony’s plant, and a recent article in Nikkei Asia provides some details on the projects the two firms are working on for upcoming iPhone models. According to reports, Sony has created a brand-new picture sensor that uses a novel semiconductor architecture to gather more light and minimize both overexposure and underexposure.

The new sensor will be distributed to other smartphone manufacturers and used in Apple’s anticipated next-generation iPhones. Apple is also developing a periscope telephoto lens to enhance the optical zoom capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro, enabling up to 10x optical zoom to compete with some Android smartphones already on the market.
