The Bard’s Tale is an action RPG game developed and published by inXile Entertainment. The series is an old classic and each title was well received among fans. Fans of the original will be excited to know that inXile Entertainment announced a remaster of the series that will be launched on August 14th.
The Bard’s Tale Trilogy
A complete remaster of the title, The Bard’s Tale Trilogy updates the graphics and adds numerous but optional quality of life changes. As there are major differences between each version of the game depending on the platform, recreating the game was a difficult task. With no complete source code of the game available, inXile would often discover incomplete features in the game’s code.
The trilogy includes a remaster of the first three games: Tales of the Unknown, The Destiny Knight and Thief of Fate. The first volume will be available at launch, with the second and third titles arriving in fall and winter later this year. The revamped versions of the game will rid all compatibility issues and feature updated art to enhance the gameplay experience. Later down the line, Legacy Mode will be added allowing players to take a trip down memory lane and make the titles play similarly to the 1980s originals.
“If archaeology and game development had a baby, it would be this project,” said Lindsay Parmenter, Head of Development at Krome. “By studying the code across different versions of the game, we were able to piece together developer intent and recreate it. Of course, having access to some of the original team members helped, too!”
inXile CEO Brian Fargo added, “We were extremely limited in what we could do in the 1980s. This is an opportunity to truly realize the vision that the original dev teams had, and in some cases fix a few bugs that are over thirty years old. Even with all the challenges this project presented, we’re thrilled with how this has turned out, and we can’t wait for our fans to start playing this.”
