SysMenu.dll is a file used by an adware which is responsible for displaying unwanted ads while you are on your browsing surfing the web. Usually error messages related to SysMenu will only pop-up when you’ve run a virus scan or an adware scan that has removed files related to this specific adware BUT has left the sysmenu.dll file in the start-up entries, so that when ever the computer starts or restarts, it calls for this entry to be executed at start-up and when it can’t find it, you’re presented with the pop-up.
You may have installed SysMenu (adware) unintentionally or it may have come packed into a software you installed, usually freewares. This is why free wares should be avoided.
Now before we begin removing this entry from Start-Up it is recommended that you run a adware scan. To run an adware scan click (here) and download AdwCleaner. Run the downloaded cleaner and click Scan, wait for Scan to Finish and then click Clean. Once the cleaning has finished, agree to the prompt asking you to reboot the PC. Once done, we can proceed with removing this entry.
Remove SysMenu.Dll from Start-Up
To remove the entry click (here) and download Autoruns. Extract the zip file and run the Autoruns program file.
You will see many entries in the main application window. Navigate to Everything tab and In the filter box, type sysmenu.dll (in this example, i used passport.dll for demonstration) find the yellow highlighted entries ending with sysmenu.dll. Select it and click the Red X from the menu bar. Reboot PC and test.
Note: Be careful not to delete any other entries. Only delete the yellow highlighted entries ending with sysmenu.dll.
This will solve the “SysMenu.dll related pop-ups” issue. In case, you receive any dll file missing errors or your system has been infected with malware, Microsoft recommends checking your system files for integrity. To check your system files, follow the steps (here)
It is highly recommended that you install programs from trusted sources only. Even if you have downloaded a program from a trusted source, choose custom or advanced option from the installer menu and un-check the installation option for any unwanted or bundled programs.
