For users looking to install custom themes on an Android device without root, Substratum Theme Engine is one of the best solutions out there. While the theme engine does not support stock Android Pie currently, the Projekt team has come up with a new lite version.
The Substratum Lite Theme Engine offers all the essential features of the full Substratum Theme Engine in a light package. In addition to a smaller app size, it is claimed to be faster as well as more stable. On the downside, however, Substratum lite will not support themes designed for the older Substratum version.
If you own a Samsung Android device, you will be disappointed by the lack of compatibility with Samsung’s new One UI for Android Pie. So if you wish to try out custom themes on a Samsung device with the latest One UI, you will have to stick with the original Substratum app.
Just like the standard Substratum Theme Engine, the new lite version is compatible with rooted as well as unrooted devices running stock Android Oreo. If your device runs Android Pie, however, it will need to be rooted (Magisk only) before you can try out various custom themes. In addition to Android Pie, Substratum Lite is compatible with rooted devices running Android Q preview as well.
Just like the full version of the Substratum Theme Engine, you can use the new lite version to theme system apps as well as third-party apps on your Android device. This means you can not only change the look of the System UI but also apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube, Twitter, or Instagram. We expect the Substratum Lite Theme Engine to become compatible with more devices in a future update. However, it remains to be seen if the team at Projekt will be able to add support for older legacy themes to the lite version.
