Today, Square Enix bought a 20% stake in Bulkhead Interactive, the studio behind Battalion 1944 and The Turing Test. Reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the Derby-based studio is set to develop a new first-person shooter IP for Square Enix.
Currently in early access, the multiplayer first-person shooter Battalion 1944 is being developed by Bulkhead Interactive. The title is scheduled for release in early 2019, and will be published by Square Enix.
“I’m really excited that we’re taking this step to deepen our partnership with the team at Bulkhead,” says Square Enix’s director of indie publishing Phil Elliot. “From the first meeting we had back in 2015 it was clear to me that the team had a great deal of potential, and we’re really looking forward to helping them continue to unlock that in the years to come.”
Bulkhead Interactive consists of two studios, Phoenix and Darkhorse. Bulkhead Phoenix is the original studio in Derby, and is responsible for the work on Battalion 1944. Bulkhead Darkhorse, which opened last July in Munich, is working on a “new and exciting first person shooter”. The branching of Bulkhead Interactive now makes sense as the original studio can continue uninterrupted work on Battalion 1944.
“It’s been a great experience working with Phil and the team at Square Enix – they’ve always been supportive, looking out for the interests of us as well as the games we’ve worked on, and this opportunity to build on that relationship is a great next step for the studio as we expand and search for new talent to join our team,” states CEO at Bulkhead Joe Brammer.
