Spotify’s “Offline Mixes” Downloads Songs Smartly for Offline Listening

As the largest music streaming platform in the world, Spotify has some major issues that it needs to address. You see, the company gives you the option to download songs manually, but what if you’re in the middle of listening to something, and your internet breaks out, or you loose connectivity?
Well, in a tweet today, Spotify’s CEO, Daniel EK said that the company is testing a new feature for the app, called “Your Offline Mixes,” which reportedly aims to ‘intelligently’ save songs, so you don’t have to worry about your connection.
Daniel showed the feature in use, with a three, and a half hour playlist and showcased how it creates one for your frequently listened songs, some other content it believes suits you, and saves it to your device. He didn’t comment on when these Offline Mixes will be available in the public releases, but for now, all we know is that it’s in the testing phase.
We know that Spotify has been working on this feature for quite a while now, and the feature itself is nothing new. YouTube’s “Offline Mixtape” essentially does the same thing, and saves you the hassle of picking and choosing the songs you want to listen when the internet goes out.
With the feature in Spotify, you can expect anything, as there is no set criteria (that we currently know of), for selecting songs for your “Offline Mix,” and this is what makes the feature so special, at least from what it looks like.
In addition to this, we know that only Premium users can download songs to their device. However, there has been nothing said about the eligibility criteria for this feature. Also, some users have mentioned seeing the playlist on their app, but they can’t exactly figure out how, or when it collects information on what to download. There even have been instances when the songs on Offline Mixes won’t play without internet connection.
As the feature is currently in testing, we can’t criticize it a lot, but till it rolls out. We will make sure to keep you updated on all developments as new information becomes available.
