2018 was a wacky year, and Soulja Boy launching his own brand of knock-off consoles last month was the cherry on top. Two weeks after the 3DS-clone SouljaGame Handheld went on sale, Nintendo’s legal team contacted the rapper and threatened legal action. Although Soulja Boy is backing off from Nintendo consoles, his latest product proves that he’s still in the game.
The console went on sale a few hours ago on the rapper’s website. The SouljaGame Handheld costs $200 console, but an ongoing sale has slashed the price by 50%. You’ll notice at first glance the console’s “exquisite craftsmanship and fashion design”, definitely unlike Sony’s PlayStation Vita.
In terms of features, the SouljaGame Handheld comes packing. If the 4.3 inch 480 x 272 HD resolution display isn’t enough, you can output the display straight to your TV. When not gaming, it’s “multi thread task mode” allow users to listen to music “while watching e-books.”
The product description boasts about supporting JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF, and PNG image formats. The stereo speakers and a high definition microphone allow the user to have “different auditory experiences.”
You don’t need to be an expert in video games to know that the SouljaGame Handheld is a ripoff. It’s an overpriced version of the X1 Handheld Game console, which can be purchased for $30 from other sites. Even at that price the console isn’t worth it. You’d be better off spending a bit more and grabbing an actual PS Vita.
Nintendo was quick to threaten legal action against Soulja Boy, but we’ll have to wait and see how Sony reacts. The threat of legal action doesn’t seem to be enough to stop the mastermind. Unlike Nintendo, Sony could end up skipping warnings and jump straight to taking legal action. If the rapper continues to violate the Trademark Counterfeiting Act, he could face up to 10 years of jail time.
