It has been eight years since we were introduced to Snapchat: another social media app that managed to isolate itself from the competition quickly. It focused on the privacy of its users and became one of the most used apps all over the world. Today, after eight years of Snap stories and Snap streaks we witnessed the Snap Partner Summit event. It was the first event hosted by Snapchat itself where they mapped out the plans of the company and announced some new features.
We know what Snapchat is and what it does, but the announcements they made today opened new horizons for the app and the company. In a nutshell, they are trying to shift from being a social media app to a one-stop entertainment house. They have announced new Snap games, new Snap Originals, new AR features, and a new Snap Kit.
Starting with the most astounding announcement, Snap games. They are adding games into the app itself which users can play anytime they want without the hassle of installation. We know that its nothing new facebook messenger has done it a few years ago. However, what Snapchat is doing with their games is something very different.
The main focus of the Snap games is Co-op the genre that is getting very popular in today’s gaming. You and your friend can quickly hop into the game through the Chat. You can see which (other) friends are playing the game. Additionally, you can send a chat or even talk during the game through the voice chat. Snap games is launching with six games. These include Bitmoji Party, Tiny Royale, Snake Squad, C.A.T.S. Drift Race, Zombie Rescue Squad, Alphabear Hustle.
The most interesting announcement for me was the additions in Snap Originals. It isn’t something new, SnapChat launched the original shows last fall. These are 3-5 minutes episodic shows that are in the discover section. They are funding more resources in this section as they announced eight new original shows.
The shows are very diverse so that they can cater to a large amount of audience. There is a comedy show, a zombie apocalypse show, a documentary and a show for teens. Some of these shows have been made by Indigo while others are the product of the partnership between Snap and NBC. For the list and details of shows, follow the link here.
Snap introduced lenses a few years back, and it has been the most used (and copied) feature of Snpachat. They are introducing augmented reality with the new update which will augment the usability of the lenses. The users can not only add filters to the faces, but also animals and even buildings can now be converted into cool adorable things. Check out the video below if you want to learn more about the new features.
These are the announcements catered towards the consumers. They have also announced a business partnership with Netflix and Tinder under Snap Kit. They haven’t announced much about Snap Kit. Stay tuned if you want to know more about Snap’s new ventures.
