Samsung Exynos 880 Chipset Meant For Mid-Range Affordable Android 5G Smartphones Indicate Specifications And Features
The next-generation mobile communication and data transmission technology have been limited to some top-end, premium Android smartphones. However, Samsung has now proposed a new chipset meant for mid-range and affordable Android mobile phones with 5G. The Samsung Exynos 880 SoC (System on a Chip) is a 5G capable chipset with decent specifications and features which will be embedded in devices that should be attractively priced.
The Samsung Exynos 880 is the company’s own, internally-developed, mobile SoC that is capable of communicating with the rapidly increasing 5G network across the world. Samsung’s primary intention behind the Exynos 880 is to offer 5G network capabilities within devices that do not sport flagship prices. Samsung has not revealed which of its phones will be powered by the new Exynos 880 SoC. However, there are already a few region-specific Android smartphones with Exynos 880.
Samsung Exynos 880 Specifications and Features:
The Samsung Exynos 880 is a mid-range SoC. It sits below the flagship Exynos 990 and Exynos 980 SoC. The chipset is manufactured on the new 8nm FinFET process. The SoC is still a rather powerful processor, consisting of dual Cortex-A77 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. There are six additional ‘Efficiency’ Cortex-A55 Cores, and they are clocked slightly lower at 1.8GHz. Needless to add, the setup is more inclined towards efficiency rather than power.

Samsung has embedded Mali-G76 MP5 GPU, which is a good mid-range graphics processor. The Samsung Exynos 880 also gets an integrated NPU, which should aid in AI performance on smartphones. The SoC supports LPDDR4X RAM, and UFS 2.1 as well as eMMC 5.1 storage.
Coming to the specifications of the smartphones that the Samsung Exynos 880 will support, the SoC will be able to handle displays up to FHD+ (2520 x 1080). In other words, no higher resolutions smartphone displays with the Exynos 880.
The same mid-range specifications continue in the imaging or camera department. While several smartphone companies are embedding 3 or even four cameras in the back, the Samsung Exynos 880 will be able to support three sensors concurrently. However, Samsung has assured the Exynos 880 will be able to support five individual sensors. The maximum resolution of the total camera sensor array is limited to 64 MP. This means manufacturers will have to embed either a 20 MP + 20 MP dual-camera configuration or a single lens with 64MP resolutions. There could be a possibility of triple camera sensors with lower resolution.
The Samsung Exynos 880 SoC will be able to support 4K video recording at 30 FPS and offer playback at the same resolution and frame-rate. Moreover, it will be able to offer playback for HEVC, H.264, and VP9 codecs. Such high-end specifications were once limited to premium Android smartphones.
Samsung Exynos 880 5G And Other Wireless Network Capabilities:
Coming to the most critical capabilities of the Samsung Exynos 880, which is the 5G mobile network and data transmission. The SoC supports 5G NR Sub-6GHz with a maximum download of 2.55 Gbps and an upload of 1.28 Gbps. For LTE, users get Cat.16 with 5CA for up to 1 Gbps download and Cat.18 with 2CA for up to 200 Mbps upload. Apart from 5G, the other wireless network and protocols that the Samsung Exynos 880 supports include Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, FM Radio, and for GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo satellite systems.
Samsung has merely mentioned the existence of the Exynos 880 for mid-range Android smartphones and offered some specifications. The company hasn’t confirmed which Android handsets will be powered by the new Exynos 880 SoC. Interestingly, the Vivo Y17s as well as Vivo Y70s Android smartphones are confirmed to be powered by the chipset. The Vivo handset is currently restricted for sale in China, but a global launch is expected.
