OLED Displays have become an integral part of the mobile industry. There are a number of notable advantages of using OLED displays over normal LCDs. That includes, vibrant colors, thinner display module, lesser power consumption and greater contrast ratio.
In a report recently released by market research firm IHS Markit, in the third quarter of 2018 OLED displays dominated over 61 percent of the global market for smartphone displays (by revenue). Samsung was dominating the market in the period between July and September 2018 with a market share of 93.3%.
As Sam Mobile reports, “The smartphone display sales raised $10.7 billion in Q3 2018, of which 61.1% ($6.6 billion) were linked to the sale of OLED panels. OLEDs held only 35 percent of the market share by revenue in the first quarter last year.” The rising demand of OLED panels had led to the increased market share of Samsung in the OLED market.
Ever since using the OLED displays for the first time in their mobile phones more than a decade ago, Samsung has been ruling over the OLED market. The number of advantages OLED panels bring over normal LCD displays made major smartphone brands to incorporate OLED displays in their flagships as well. The dominating market share of Samsung in the OLED market is due to the fact that Samsung doesn’t make OLED displays for its own products, but sells them to other manufacturers like Apple as well.
Dominating All Segments
Commenting on the overall domination of Samsung in the overall display market, Sam Mobile adds “Samsung holds a 57.8 percent market share by revenue in the overall smartphone display market, which also includes LCD panels. China’s BOE and Tianma distantly followed the company with 7.8 percent and 7.7 percent share, respectively. The demand for flexible OLED display is also on a high right now. And Samsung nearly has a monopoly in this segment too. The company accounted for 94.2 percent of the market for flexible OLED panels in Q3 2018.”
It is clearly evident from the above stats that Samsung is indeed dominating the display market. The company had showcased it’s foldable display at SDC 2018. And, that device is all set to hit the market in 2019 as well. There are rumors that Samsung will be launching 4k OLED Laptops as well. With so much to come from Samsung, a rise in the numbers won’t be surprising.
