RuneScape, a free-to-play MMORPG created by Jagex, is arguably the developer’s most famous title. Currently, two versions of the game, RuneScape 3 and OldSchool RuneScape are the active projects of the developer. However, a newly discovered LinkedIn listing suggests Jagex might be working on a RuneScape-themed action RPG.
There’s not much known about the secret title, apart from the fact that it’s a “Runescape Action Role Playing Game”. As the game is an ‘action’ RPG based on RuneScape, it will likely feature new combat mechanics mixed with the traditional RPG elements, like skilling. Last year in March, Jagex announced a new partnership with SpatialOS, possibly to use the platform for their new title.
Although the source of the rumor seems authentic enough, there is always the possibility that the project is cancelled before it’s even announced. The executive producer of the game has worked on numerous projects throughout his career. The most notable works of Richardsson include ‘Defiance’, ‘EVE Online’, and ‘Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade’.
While Jagex has launched several games before, RuneScape is by far their most successful title. FunOrb, a gaming site started by Jagex in 2008, shut down earlier this year in August. The company also worked on a browser MMO named Stellar Dawn, which was scrapped during development. Recently, Jagex launched mobile versions of OldSchool RuneScape, a long-awaited and well-received addition.
With this in mind, it would make sense for Jagex to create a new game with similarities to RuneScape. Jagex saw great success with the game when it launched, and to this day, thousands of users continue to play the years-old MMORPG. This is, however, just a rumor, and we’ll have to wait for an official announcement from Jagex to know whether a RuneScape style ARPG is real or not.
