Risk of Rain 2, a co-op rogue-like shooter from Hopoo Games, has launched on Steam early access. The sequel to 2013’s 2D platformer is the studio’s first fully 3D project. Developer Hopoo Games partnered with Gearbox Official to surprise-release the game on Steam.
Risk of Rain 2
Risk of Rain 2 offers the classic multiplayer rougelike action elements seen in the first game, but makes the transition into a 3D world. Players are dropped onto a planet filled with hordes of monsters. The game can be played solo or co-op in teams of up to four players. Randomized stages, enemies, bosses, and items ensure that each play through is unique.
The game is available now via Steam early access, and developers estimate it will stay there for approximately a year.
“We want to make sure the game launches in a state we are happy with and don’t want to rush it.”
Throughout the year, the developers will primarily focus on adding more content and squashing bugs. Since its launch earlier today, Risk of Rain 2 players have reported numerous bugs. A thread offering workarounds has been set up while the developers work on permanent solutions. Hopoo Games wants Risk of Rain 2 to be “super polished” by the time it leaves early access.
In terms of content, Risk of Rain 2 features over 75 items and equipment, 6 playable classes and 6 boxes. For version 1.0, the developers plan to add at least 10 characters, 10 stages, 12 bosses, and over 100 items. Additionally, more game features and localization beyond just English are in the works.
To justify the additional content, the game’s price will be increased once it leaves early access.
Risk of Rain 2 is available now on PC via Steam. Purchasing the game before March 30th at 12PM PT will give you an extra copy to share with a friend.
